Snake Eyes review
certificate 15 Running time: 94 minutes Starring: Nicolas Cage , Gary Sinise, Carla Gugino, John Heard Rating 7 out of 10 Atmospheric, visually impressive thriller from Mission: Impossible director Brian De Palma, whose creativity bursts through right from a near seamless opening Steadicam shot - the camera pursuing police detective Rick Santoro ( Nicolas Cage ) into and around the buzzing hive of the Atlantic City Arena for some 20 minutes.
Local boy champ Lincoln Tyler (Stan Shaw) is about to defend his heavyweight title, and Santoro's old mate Kevin Dunne (Gary Sinise) - a Naval Commander in charge of security for the US Secretary of Defence - has wangled ringside seats.
But then the champ goes down, shots are fired, and the Secretary is dead. 14,000 spectators panic, but as the exits are sealed, Santoro is left temporarily in charge, and responsible for sifting through those 14,000 to uncover what precisely happened, and who fired the fatal bullet.
Although a regrettable degeneration into bog standard, finale run-in ultimately disappoints, this deceptive suspenser has many qualities, and slowly tightens over a superbly gripping first hour.

Garter Snakes - General Care
Welcome to the world of Garter snakes (genus Thamnophis) an active, semi-aquatic diurnal snake from the Americas where it ranges from the tropics to as far North as Canada. By Greg M from Perthshire on Tuesday 28th July 2009 With 31 species and 64 subspecies there is a vast range of vibrantly coloured animals to choose from.
Housing
The general rule when it comes to choosing the size of enclosure is - that the snake should be allowed to be able to fully stretch out its body in the space provided therefore the length of the enclosure should match the length of the snake. My personal recommendation is that the enclosure can never be large enough (I currently keep sexed groups of 3-4 snakes in vivaria that measure 144x30x40cm). Garter snakes are very active and will spend hours exploring their enclosure. Providing plenty of climbing opportunities will help to maximise the space provided. Giving your garter places to hide will help it to feel more secure. Ground cover can also be provided by means of plastic plants. Substrates should also be chosen carefully. Garters love to burrow, defecate frequently and are ferocious feeders. You should therefore choose a substrate that is not sharp, easy to clean and not small enough to be ingested.

Snake Eyes
Brian DePalma does it again. This movie is a tale of intrigue, deception and many plots with plots. It opens with a 15 minute lone mise-en-scene. This is a technique where a single camera holds a shot while the action moves within it. The opening consists of a single camera moving through the action until the point of the assassination which is the focal point of the film. DePalma does not stop there in his use of camera tricks. He uses a casino's spycam network to follow the action as it unfolds in several locations at once. He provides an overhead view meandering from room to room in the hotel and his quick cuts keep the action moving. He also employs many flashbacks on important events as the story unfolds. Each flashback provides the viewer with a different perspective and reveals another piece of the puzzle. And what a puzzle it is. Each piece is carefully constructed to provide a tease for the next piece. The acting in this film is top notch. Nicolas Cage as the shady cop and Gary Sinise as the naval man charged with protecting the victim of this conspiracy. While each character seems to be playing a well known type, bad cop, good soldier, things are not what they seem. Twists and turns in the plot are reflected in the characters. No one is as they seem just as they facts are constantly pointing to blind turns. Cage is great in his usual over the top performance. Sinise is more subtle and underplays his role to perfection. This DVD does lack features. A commentary by DePalma as the director and writer would have been great. His technical use of the camera would have made for great explanations. The sound is a bi

    QUICK TAKE:
Suspense/Thriller: A corrupt Atlantic City cop tries to figure out who assassinated the U.S. Secretary of Defense during a heavyweight boxing match.
    PLOT:
Rick Santoro (NICOLAS CAGE) is a flamboyant and corrupt Atlantic City police detective who isn't above taking bribes and has a girlfriend that his wife and child don't know about. Navy Commander Kevin Dunne (GARY SINISE) is a straight-laced Department of Defense staffer who happens to be an old friend of Rick's. They meet at a heavyweight boxing match where Dunne has pulled rank to provide protection for the U.S. Secretary of Defense, Charles Kirkland (JOEL FABIANI), who has decided to attend the match. When Dunne goes off to investigate a mysterious and seemingly out of place woman, the Secretary is assassinated right next to Santoro, and Dunne manages to kill the assassin. Immediately sealing the arena, Santoro quickly takes steps to save his friend's career while beginning his investigation of the 14,000 fight fans who are all now witnesses to the crime and possible suspects and accomplices. As Dunne follows his instructions, Santoro tries to sort out the answers from three key witnesses who may know something about the murder.

I sometimes wish that director Brian De Palma would spend as much time concentrating on the plots of his movies, as he does dazzling his audiences with film technique. De Palma's latest offering, SNAKE EYES The opening moments of SNAKE EYES rival Orson Welles' TOUCH OF EVIL for the brilliant use of a continuous take that follows the lead character through an Atlantic City arena moments before a boxing match is scheduled to begin. The plot concerns a political assassination that takes place during a high profile boxing match. In the aftermath, an Atlantic City homicide detective locks down the arena, so he piece together a series of events that don't quite add up. Nicolas Cage stars as Rick Santoro, the homicide detective who hasn't always played by the rules. Gary Sinise portrays Kevin Dunne, a Naval Commander in charge of the security detail for the ill-fated Secretary Of Defense. Carla Gugino is Julia Costello, the mysterious woman in white who holds the key to conspiracy behind the assassination. The cast of SNAKE EYES also includes Stan Shaw and Kevin Dunn. While the plot has the believability factor of zero, De Palma's filmmaking bravado keeps the viewer off balance during the proceedings and unable to question the gaps in logic until the film has finished unspooling.

They have unique requirements and should only be kept by those with the commitment to understand and meet their needs. If you are new to pet snakes, find out what you should consider before deciding on a pet snake, and what species are the best snakes for beginners. Choosing a Snake as a Pet - First Things First
    • When choosing a snake, you are making a long term commitment - many can be expected to live longer than 20 years.
    • You must be willing to feed prey animals to your snake (though frozen, pre-killed prey is the best choice), and you will probably have to devote some freezer space to frozen prey items (i.e. rodents).

C+ Directed by Brian De Palma Running Time: 1:38 Snake Eyes is more thriller than action-adventure. Don't go in thinking there's going to be a lot of gun battles or chase sequences. It's more mystery, whodunit type thriller, where you have to figure out who did what from the "clues" given throughout the film. Although this was more they type of movie where they didn't actually give you any visible clues, they just showed the scene again from another point of view later on, so the audience would go, ohh, I get it now... that's what really happened... Snake Eyes stars Nicolas Cage as Atlantic City cop Rick Santoro. Now Rick is the kind of guy who'll take a few bucks from you and look away. He's got a wife, and a kid, and a girlfriend. He drives an expensive car, and has aspirations of running for mayor. Everyone knows about Rick, especially his friend, Navy Commander Kevin Dunn (Gary Sinise). It's fight night at the Atlantic City Convention Center, and the Secretary of Defense is in attendance, with Dunn as the lead "bodyguard" for the night. But shortly after the fight starts, an assassins bullet kills the Secretary, and all hell breaks loose. It's up to Santoro to figure out who did what and why. Without ruining anything, it turns out to be a few stories, seemingly having nothing to do with each other, that come together as Santoro figures out what happened, and learns a few things he really didn't want to know. Overall, I'd say

Snakes: General Information A snake is a backboned animal with a long, legless body covered by dry scales. The eyes of a snake are covered by clear scales instead of movable eyelids, meaning that its eyes are always open. Snakes have a narrow, forked tongue, which is used to bring odors to a special sense organ in the mouth, allowing them to follow the scent trails of their prey. Like other reptiles, snakes can maintain a fairly steady body temperature by external means. For example, they can raise their body temperature by lying in the sun. In contrast, many other animals have internal mechanisms that regulate their body temperature. Snakes developed gradually from lizards millions of years ago, and they resemble lizards more than they do other reptiles. But unlike most lizards, snakes lack legs, movable eyelids, and outer ears. Their scales and skulls also differ from those of lizards. Snakes are found on every continent except Antarctica. They live in deserts, forests, oceans, streams, and lakes. Many snakes are ground dwellers, and some live underground. Others dwell in trees, and still others spend most of their time in water. Snakes cannot survive where the ground stays frozen the year around, so no snakes live in the polar regions or at high elevations in mountains. In addition, no snakes are native to Ireland or New Zealand.

      Snake Eyes
Published: Monday, Aug. 24, 1998 4:33 p.m. MDT By Jeff Vice 0 comments E-MAIL PRINT Film review The obvious inspiration for this uneven suspense-thriller is Hitchcock's 1948 thriller "Rope," which used a series of 10-minute-plus takes to convey a sense of real-time action. There are also bits swiped from Akira Kurosawa's 1951 Japanese mystery "Rashomon," and several other Hitchcock films (some of which work surprisingly well here). Unfortunately, the material isn't up to par with De Palma's directorial conceits, and he and screenwriter David Koepp (with whom De Palma collaborated on the 1996 big-screen version of "Mission: Impossible") tip their hands far too early. Once the central plot is revealed, it's all downhill. From the archive

    http://biology.uta.edu/herpetology/watersnakes.htm
Water snakes of the Dallas Fort Worth area Water snakes are very common in the Dallas Fort Worth area. They are non-venomous, pose no threat to humans, and should not be killed. These snakes commonly occur in rivers, creeks, lakes, marshes, swamps, and manufactured bodies of water including ponds and stock tanks. Water snakes lack venom, but they can defend themselves by delivering a series of rapid bites while smearing feces and musk onto anyone attempting to capture them. Water snakes only bite whenever captured or handled and pose no threat to humans. Unfortunately, water snakes are often confused with the venomous cottonmouth. Fortunately, water snakes are easy to distinguish from cottonmouths as can be seen here: Link to water snake / cottonmouth comparison. The water snakes occurring in north-central Texas primarily consume frogs. Despite popular opinion, these snakes do not hunt many fish. On occasions, specimens are known to take advantage of small fish trapped in shrinking pools that were drying out from a summer drought or those found in shallow streams. However, under normal circumstances, healthy game and sport fish are too fast for the snake to capture. In fact, by removing sick or weakened fish, this snake actually helps and improves fish populations. While water snakes predate upon many small animals, they serve as a food item to several others and are an important component of the food chain. Wading birds consume various sizes of water snakes, fish including bass, catfish, and gar will consume juveniles. Reptiles predators include snapping turtles and alligators while mammals including cats, opossums, skunks, coyotes, and raccoons are additional predators known to make an occasional meal out of water snakes.

Snake General Care Sheet Common Snakes: General Husbandry Information Sheet With proper care, most common snakes (kingsnakes, milk snakes, rat snakes, etc.) can be maintained with great success, and will live many healthy years in captivity. Without a good understanding of the needs of these animals, however, even the most well intentioned beginning snake keeper is doomed to failure; an experience disappointing to the keeper as well as unfair to the animal. Housing Generally, snakes do not require enormous amounts of space. A cage size of one half to two thirds of its body length is sufficient for most adult snakes. Glass aquariums or plastic sweater boxes provide the most secure and sanitary means for housing your snake. Lids can be of screen or pegboard, and care should be taken at all times to ensure that the cage is escape-proof as snakes are great escape artists (caution must be used with a screen lid, as snakes tend to rub their noses raw on the mesh). A place to hide is essential for many snakes, and this can be provided by something as simple as a cardboard box, turned upside down in the cage, with a hole cut in the side. There are many substrates available for your cage, with newspaper or paper towels being the most economical and sanitary, as they are absorbent and easy to clean. Shavings, ground corn cob, and gravel are generally not good choices as skin infections can be caused by these beddings, and ingestion of particles during feeding is almost unavoidable. Ingested substrate can cause severe impaction, and the vapors from the shavings, such as cedar, are toxic to snakes.
