Basic Facts
Common Name:
Western Hognose Snake (3 subspecies - Plains, Dusty, Mexican)
Scientific Name:
Heterodon nasicus (Subspecies: H.n. nasicus H.n. gloydi H.n. kennerlyi
Size:
Length: 16-25 inches (record 35 inches)
Range:
Southern Alberta and northwest Manitoba, south to southeast Arizona, Texas, and into northern Mexico. Also Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas.
Habitat:
Relatively dry, sandy prairie areas, scrubland and river floodplains.
Description of temperament:
A wild caught specimen may flatten its head and neck, hiss, and even strike but rarely, if ever, bites. If agitated to an extreme, the animal may even "play 'possum" by rolling over and playing dead. Captive hatched babies will also display some of these behaviors but both wild caught and captive bred usually lose their willingness to display these behaviors. Since these animals are protected by state laws in some of their range, it is best to try to obtain a captive bred individual.
Captive Care
Caging:
Except in the case of an exceptionally large hognose, a 10 gallon aquarium is big enough for this species. Substrates commonly used include Astroturf, cypress mulch, aspen bedding, coarse sand, and newspaper (at least two weeks old to allow the ink to dry). Never, never, never use ground corncob as substrate for reptiles. Cob is easily ingested by the animals when they eat and can kill the animal by causing intestinal blockage (cob swells when it absorbs water). Since hognose are burrowers, either cypress mulch, aspen bedding, or coarse sand would probably be the best choice of substrate. (Be careful when using sand - again it can cause serious problems by being ingested when the snake eats.)

North America
The common gartersnake is extremely variable in colouration and pattern; either stripes or spots may predominate. The species illustrated here is from eastern Ontario, Canada, and is black with lemon yellow stripes. In the Maritimes, it is gray or brown with spots, and its stripes are often obscured. In the west, from Manitoba to British Columbia, it is boldly marked with red and stripes. It is usually about 46 to 70 cm in length (18 to 27.5 in.), with the rare individual growing more than 1 m (39 in.). The common gartersnake occupies a wide variety of terrestrial and semi-aquatic habitats such as meadows, marshes, woodlands, hillsides, along streams and drainage ditches, and in parks. In winter, the snakes often den up in rock outcroppings or fissures in the ground beneath the frost line, sometimes by the thousands. Road embankments, mammal burrows and basements of old buildings are also common hibernacula.

Introduction Since Adam and Eve, snakes have long been portrayed as evil creatures to be feared. Our history is long, and myths and phobias are hard to break. Built into their religious practice, Pentecostal Movement preachers in the hills of Tennessee handle rattlesnakes. They now struggle with local law enforcement since rattlesnakes are protected in many states. Aboriginal groups in Australia hold the snake in high esteem, and it is a symbol of fertility. Native Americans felt that snakes symbolized life cycles and truth. There are widespread myths regarding snakes:
  • Snakes hold their tails in their mouths to create a circle and will chase you.

We do not recommend that a novice or average snake hobbyist keep venemous species of snakes. Selecting a pet snake
The most common snakes kept by enthusiasts are the many and varied constrictor species (boas, pythons, rat and milk snakes, etc.), and the racer, gopher and garter species. The husbandry and dietary requirements for these types of snakes vary considerably. Furthermore, some of the same species (notably the boa constrictors and pythons) reach very large sizes in captivity, and their considerable space requirements must be anticipated. Before you acquire a snake, you should carefully consider the following recommendations:
    • Research the major husbandry requirements of the snake and determine whether or not you can successfully meet them now and in the future. Husbandry requirements include diet, environment (living space, temperature, humidity, lighting, etc.) and sanitation considerations. Research the environmental temperature of the species. Temperatures vary among species and among individuals of the same species. Select a snake that can feed without difficulty and one that is eating regularly Select a snake that appears healthy in all respects.

Rating... Black Snake Moan tells the story that redemption is always achievable, even in the darkest of hours. All that's needed is a God-fearing bluesman, a swinging soundtrack, and a really long chain.
Craig Brewer, the maker of , brings us the story of an unlikely companionship between a girl named Rae (Christina Ricci), who suffers from nymphomania, and a recently divorced African-American man named Lazarus (Samuel L. Jackson). Through this relationship, they both learn how to fight the evil in their hearts and confront their lives head-on.
Rae has the most difficulty because she's trying to fight the nymphomania that controls her actions and spins her life into unimaginable trouble. It is so horrendous, in fact, that she alone cannot conquer it. Times like these call for drastic measures, and that is precisely what happens.
