Soaps are made from lye, animal fats and/or vegetable oils, and water in a process called saponification . Store bought soaps are generally detergents that are made from petroleum instead of fats or oils. The soaps you make will be much better for your skin because the natural moisturizing quality in the fats and oils is retained. Soap making is a fun and useful hobby!
    Definitions...
    Basic Soaps
Simple soaps in which the quantities of fats and oils are adjusted to produce varying degrees of texture, mildness and lathering. Additional ingredients are not necessary for saponification but can be included. This is usually only done if you do not intend to mill the soap later.
    Essential Oils
Oils distilled directly from plant materials. Choose based on desired effect for aromatherapy and skin care properties.
    Fragrance Oils
Synthetically produced oils that attempt to duplicate the scent of essential oils. Although they may have good aromatherapy qualities, they do not contain the other properties derived from the actual plants.
    Hand-Milled Soaps
Soaps made by grating basic soaps and re-melting them with water. Additional ingredients are usually added during this process. These soaps allow for a greater variety and provide an opportunity for using fancy molds.

    Welcome!
We started the North Country Soapmaking Library in 1998 with recipes and hints we had collected from messages sent to our soapmaking mailing list. We wanted the library to have a friendly feel and hopefully read like a community cookbook, so each recipe is presented in the contributor's own writing style and includes their accompanying comments about specific techniques for the recipe. We also wanted the hints and recipes to be from firsthand soapmaking experience, so we asked contributors to share only their own "tried and true" favorite recipes or hints. Later we began adding material from our online forum, as well as articles we had written ourselves (mostly in response to reader questions). We are just beginning to transfer the soapmaking library to this new format, and we will be adding more information regularly. Please note: A reminder: Enjoy! Ida Estep discovers her Grandmother's recipe
After my mother died this spring, I disposed of her clothes to the Salvation Army but had put off going through her papers. My mother lived with me for the last four years of her life (she had Alzheimers). She was determined never to go to a nursing home. Even as her mind slipped away and her health failed, she never stopped making it clear that she did not plan on going to a nursing home. I am glad to say that she died in her own room (well, her own room in my homeI had to move her up from her own home in Pennsylvania), in her sleep, without any apparent pain. Actually for the last few months of her life, she wasn't even on medication. As the doctor said, she just was running down like a clock and there was really nothing to do about it. (She died a week short of her 91st birthday-no, I am not quite as old as that implies, I was a menopausal baby).
