EMERGENCE
Besides these motivations for movement emergence, some type of organizational base needs to be in existence to mobilize large numbers of people (McAdam 1999). These organizational assets may be traditional, such as solidarities based on village, religious, regional, or ethnic identities, or they may be associational, rooted in secondary groups such as labor unions, social clubs, agricultural cooperatives, educational institutions, and more formal social-movement organizations (SMOs) (Oberschall 1973). Without preexisting solidarity ties and organizational links, either formal or informal, it is unlikely that threats or opportunities will convert into social-movement campaigns. Hence, social-movement scholars give special attention to variations in organizational resources across localities and over time in explaining social-movement emergence (Edwards and McCarthy 2004).

Course description Social Movements Code: Teacher(s): Dr. Marianne Maeckelbergh and Dr. Ratna Saptari ECTS: Level: Period: Semester 1 Block: I, II Language: English This course can be followed as part of the BA specialisation Global Connections
onderdeel BA Culturele Antropologie en Ontwikkelingssociologie
Course Description
Social movements and collective action have emerged in close connection with the development of structural inequalities, marginalization and exclusion on the one hand and the ideas of rights, social justice and entitlements, on the other. Different groups and organizations have built platforms of solidarity and mobilization to make claims and express their grievances targeting either the state or capital or international institutions. If in the past social movements or collective action have emerged and concentrated protest within nation-states or colonial states, with the increasing interconnectedness of different locations and social spaces, hierarchically or vertically, currently social movements have attained global dimensions. This course will therefore examine and discuss social movements as part of global processes but also as being locally embedded. It will look at how local action is ‘externalized’ or become part of global action; and how global social movements are internalized; and how meanings change as politics of contention experience shifts in scale. By concentrating on specific cases we will look at the cultural, political and social dimensions of social movements. Theoretical debates generated within different disciplines in the social sciences and the contribution of anthropology to these debates will be discussed.

African Women Writing Resistance
An Anthology of Contemporary Voices
Edited by Jennifer Browdy de Hernandez, Pauline Dongala, Omotayo Jolaosho, Anne Serafin
Confronting entrenched social inequality and inadequate access to resources, women across Africa are working with determination and imagination to improve their material conditions and to blaze a clear path for their daughters and granddaughters. The 31 African-born contributors to African Women Writing Resistance move beyond the linked dichotomies of victim/oppressor and victim/heroine to present their experiences of resistance in full complexity: they are at the forward edge of the tide of women's empowerment that, at the start of the 21st century, is moving across the African continent.
