ASA Section on Collective Behavior and Social Movements
The ASA Section on Collective Behavior and Social Movements (CBSM) was created in 1980 to foster the study of emergent and extra-institutional social forms and behavior, particularly crowds and social movements. Our interests run from disasters and riots to rumors and panics; from popular culture to strikes, revivals and revolutions. With over 800 members, CBSM is one of the ASA's largest and most active sections.

Christian Polygamy INFO TM
The definitive resource for general information about Christian Polygamy Only a few short years ago, the mere suggestion of putting the words, "Christian" and "Polygamy", beside each other as one term would have been laughed at. It would have been called a "contradiction in terms" and an "oxymoron". But no one is laughing anymore. After much patient prayer, love, and work by committed Christ-centered, Spirit-led, Scripture-believing evangelical conservative Christians, from all kinds of different denominational backgrounds, the Truth is being believed and spread to others! Christian Polygamy has become a reality and is now being taken very seriously in a number of spheres of influence.

False Promises? Obama's Foreign Policy in Latin America
Just a few months after taking office, President Barack Obama started hemispheric relations out on the right foot.  At the Summit of the Americas held in Trinidad last April, he stated that he wanted to "launch a new chapter of engagement" in the region, establishing relationships with "no senior partner or junior partner".  He shook hands warmly with heads of state including Hugo Chavez.  He listened more than he lectured.  Were we witnessing the birth of a new era in US-Latin American relations? Not so fast.  A year and a half into Obama's tenure, it's a good time to reassess his foreign policy.  On balance, it's been a disappointment. True, things have improved somewhat over President George W. Bush's time in office.  Then again, during the Bush administration, US-Latin American relations could scarcely have been worse. Why Open Source misses the point of Free Software
by Richard Stallman users' essential freedoms Tens of millions of people around the world now use free software; the public schools of some regions of India and Spain now teach all students to use the free GNU/Linux operating system The free software movement has campaigned for computer users' freedom since 1983. In 1984 we launched the development of the free operating system GNU, so that we could avoid the nonfree operating systems that deny freedom to their users. During the 1980s, we developed most of the essential components of the system and designed the GNU General Public License We in the free software movement don't think of the open source camp as an enemy; the enemy is proprietary (nonfree) software. But we want people to know we stand for freedom, so we do not accept being mislabeled as open source supporters.
The (which is published by the Open Source Initiative and is too long to include here) was derived indirectly from our criteria for free software. It is not the same; it is a little looser in some respects, so the open source people have accepted a few licenses that we consider unacceptably restrictive. Also, they judge solely by the license of the source code, whereas our criterion also considers whether a device will let you
