Concepts and theories of classical sociology and application of these concepts and theories to the analysis of contemporary society. Assumptions and concepts of major theories of sociology. Sociology Subject Index "Man is double. There are two beings in him: an individual being which has its foundation in the organism and the circle of whose activities is therefore strictly limited, and a social being which represents the highest reality in the intellectual and moral order that we can know by observation-I mean society. This duality of our nature has as its consequence in the practical order, the irreducibility of a moral ideal to a utilitarian motive, and in the order of thought, the irreducibility of reason to individual experience. In so far as he belongs to society, the individual transcends himself, both when he thinks and when he acts." - Emile Durkheim. Specialized Sociology Subfields Sociology Topical Subjects Sociology Topical Subject Index Sociology Books 2010 ... Culture and Cultural Studies in Sociology The deepest problems of modern life flow from the attempt of the individual to maintain the independence and individuality of his existence against the sovereign powers of society, against the weight of the historical heritage and the external culture and technique of life. - Georg Simmel

TYPIFICATION
Sociologyindex Sociology Books 2009 Typification is typical social construction based on standard assumptions. In the process of typification we form a construct of a typical way of acting, assume typical underlying motivations or personality. For example we make prior assumptions about the personalities and behaviour of a doctor, priest or judge. Ethnomethodologists have studied the use of this process of typification as a tool for understanding how people such as coroners, prosecutors, police officers and others achieve a sense of concreteness and predictability in their work. The Racial and Ethnic Typification of Crime and the Criminal Typification of Race and Ethnicity in Local Television News
Ted Chiricos, Sarah Eschholz
Local news programming from three television stations in Orlando, Florida was analyzedfor racial and ethnic content in relation to crime. The data show that Blacks arenot overrepresented among TV news suspects relative to their proportion in the populationor among those arrested in Orlando. Hispanics are slightly overrepresented inrelation to their numbers in the population. Qualitatively, Blacks and especially Hispanicswho appear as crime suspects do so in more threatening contexts than Whites.Blacks are more likely to appear as criminal suspects than as victims or positive rolemodels, but this pattern is especially amplified for Hispanics. These results suggestthat local TV news may contribute to the social construction of threat in relation toBlacks and Hispanics, a condition that is associated with fear of crime, "modern racism,"and the mobilization of various social controls and exclusions. - jrc.sagepub.com/cgi/content/abstract/39/4/400

Welcome to our weekly journal, Dear Habermas We try in good faith to provide access to textual and visual material across disciplines that will clarify many perspectives of every issue, for critical thought is our goal, not the profession of any given position. Virtual publication permits us to leap temporal and spatial barriers, and our commitment to answerability facilitates participation for those who have a solid liberal arts background in writing and thinking AND for those who have not yet had that privilege. Our interpretation is that good faith demands that we share our collective editing skills, theoretical references, interpretive skills with those who are trying to present a validity claim. We cannot claim expertise in all of the many disciplines to which we allude in our discussions. You will need to delve further into the resource links and texts we and others proffer for such expertise. We invite others with greater expertise to enter the dialog and expand our collective knowledge. We are opposed to "knowingness," the certitude that the bit of liberal arts and/or science knowledge to which we have been exposed provides "a right answer" to any of the issues that really matter in our lives today.

Overview Sociology and Anthropology The core requirements for a B.A. in sociology involve credits in sociology, anthropology, criminal justice, social work, and gerontology. What makes sociology unique is the constant quest to to apply the knowledge gained by studying society to improve society. Sociology creates the awareness that changing society for the better is the responsibility of every citizen and fosters appreciation of the interconnections between each person and the social environment.
Dr. DasGupta (center) Criminal Justice The criminal justice field is expected to need increased numbers of qualified college graduates, especially in the areas of forensic accounting, homeland security, crime scene analysis, rehabilitation of offenders, and private security. The criminal justice major is designed both for those new to the field as well as those already in the field who wish to increase knowledge and academic credentials. The focus on women and social justice provides a perspective not usually encountered in traditional programs.
