Other subjects should be added over time. As written in the Computer Programming book, coding is only a small part of software engineering. This book is intended as an introduction to the realm of software engineering.

Software engineering is a broad engineering topic whose goal is, ultimately, how to assist the production of cost-effective, reliable software. It is described by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) as "the application of a systematic, disciplined, quantifiable approach to the development, operation, and maintenance of software As an academic topic of interest, the field of software engineering was arguably born with the publication in 1975 of the book The Mythical Man Month by Frederick P. Brooks, Jr. The book, now in its second edition, is still commonly used as background reading in college courses and was the first treatment to challenge the usefulness of adding programmers to an already late programming project.

The software development methodology framework didn't emerge until the 1960s. According to Elliott (2004) the systems development life cycle (SDLC) can be considered to be the oldest formalized methodology framework for building information systems . The main idea of the SDLC has been "to pursue the development of information systems in a very deliberate, structured and methodical way, requiring each stage of the life cycle from inception of the idea to delivery of the final system, to be carried out in rigidly and sequentially". within the context of the framework being applied. The main target of this methodology framework in the 1960s was "to develop large scale functional

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search Software engineering is a field of Computer science , concerned with designing and writing programs for computers . A software engineer tries to change software so that it is of a better quality. Better quality software is easier to understand, to maintain, or to extend. Becoming a software engineer is a higher education, done at the university level, usually. Software engineering can be very difficult work. Today it is mostly done in a team. Software engineering can broadly be split into the following:
  • Requirements say what the software should do. Software design is usually done on paper. It says what the different components of the software are, and how they interact. When the design phase is done, the software is implemented, the different components are coded. At the end of the implementation, tests are done to see if the components meet the requirements. Note that the requirements can change over time.

edit Overview
Prior to the mid-1990s, software practitioners called themselves programmers or developers, regardless of their actual jobs. Many people prefer to call themselves software developer and programmer , because most widely agree what these terms mean, while software engineer is still being debated. A prominent computing scientist, E. W. Dijkstra , wrote in a paper that the coining of the term software engineer was not a useful term since it was an inappropriate analogy, "The existence of the mere term has been the base of a number of extremely shallow and false analogies, which just confuse the issue...Computers are such exceptional gadgets that there is good reason to assume that most analogies with other disciplines are too shallow to be of any positive value, are even so shallow that they are only confusing." The term programmer has often been used as a pejorative term to refer to those without the tools, skills, education, or ethics to write good quality software. In response, many practitioners called themselves
