It has been estimated that after reflection and absorption in the earth's atmosphere, the total radiation reaching the land area of South Africa amounts to roughly 1 kilowatt per square meter at noon on a sunny day. Direct solar energy can be used to heat water or buildings, or to produce electricity in solar cells. Energy from wind, water or plants is considered indirect solar energy. South Africa has one of the world's best climates for solar power, but not many people are making use of this form of energy. The difficulty is not so much with the energy source (the sun) but rather with the cost and availability of the solar technologies and appliances. Photovoltaic (PV) applications Solar photovoltaic (PV) cells convert sunlight, the world's most abundant and widespread renewable energy source, directly into electricity. The first major use of solar cells occurred in the American space programme and satellites in orbit around the earth are still powered by solar electricity. Solar cells are used to generate electricity for water pumping, vaccine refrigeration, security lighting, electric fencing, household power, meteorological monitoring, radio repeaters, railway line switches, street lighting, highway telephones, calculators and watches.

Solar Photovoltaic Energy Solar PV (photovoltaic) uses energy from the sun to create electricity to run appliances and lighting. PV requires only daylight, not direct sunlight to generate electricity and so can still generate some power on a cloudy day. How does it work? Photovoltaic systems use cells to convert sunlight into electricity. The PV cell consists of one or two layers of a semi conducting material, usually silicon. When light shines on the cell it creates an electric field across the layers causing electricity to flow. The greater the intensity of the light, the greater the flow of electricity. PV cells are referred to in terms of the amount of energy they generate in full sunlight, know as kilowatt peak or kWp. The benefits PV systems produce no greenhouse gases. A typical domestic system can save approximately 1.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, adding up to almost 30 tonnes over a system’s lifetime. Is it suitable for my home?

Thursday 29th July 2010, 10:43am in Far from their advertising slogan of 'record investments in solar and other renewables', the Labor government is pulling money out of solar power at a record rate, the Australian Greens said today. In addition to the $220 million pulled out of the Solar Flagships program and $150 million from solar hot water rebates to fund cash for clunkers, the Greens have learned that the world renowned UNSW Centre for Excellence in Photovoltaic Research has been de-funded. At the same time, the Liberals are proposing cuts to climate programs as part of their savings initiatives, leaving the Greens as the only party with credible policies for climate action. "The government is cynically using Australians' love of solar power as an advertising slogan while ripping money out of what little funding programs they have," Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Senator Christine Milne, said.

The method according to claim 1, wherein the type of charge carriers of the first transparent conductive oxide layer is opposite to that of the second transparent conductive oxide layer.
