22. Solar System
Solar System comprises the Sun and the retinue of celestial objects gravitationally bound to it
http://www.solar-system.name/
Main Menu Solar System Planets and Bodies Layout and Structure Formation ... Contact Solar System Solar System - The solar system comprises the Sun and the retinue of celestial objects gravitationally bound to it: the eight planets, their 162 known moons, three currently identified solar system dwarf planets and their four known moons, and thousands of small bodies. This last category includes asteroids, meteoroids, comets, and interplanetary dust.
In broad terms, the charted regions of the Solar System consist of the Sun, four rocky bodies close to it called the terrestrial planets, an inner belt of rocky asteroids, four gas giant planets and an outer belt of small icy bodies known as the Kuiper belt. In order of their distances from the Sun, the planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. Six of the eight planets are in turn orbited by natural satellites (usually termed "moons" after Earth's Moon) and every planet past the asteroid belt is encircled by planetary rings of dust and other particles. The planets other than Earth are named after gods and goddesses from Greco-Roman mythology.
From 1930 to 2006, Pluto, the largest known Kuiper belt object, was considered the Solar System's ninth planet. However, in 2006 the International Astronomical Union (IAU) created an official definition of the term "planet". Under this definition, Pluto is reclassified as a dwarf planet, and there are eight planets in the Solar System. In addition to Pluto, the IAU currently recognizes two other dwarf planets: Ceres, the largest object in the asteroid belt, and Eris, which lies beyond the Kuiper belt in a region called the scattered disc. Of the known dwarf planets, only Ceres has no moons.

THE SYSTEM Introduction The Sun Mercury Venus ... The Oort Cloud OTHER About Solar System Quiz Introduction Our Solar System was created when a nebula, made up of mostly hydrogen, gradually collapsed and formed a spinning protostar. Gravitational contraction heated the protostar and a nuclear fission reaction was sparked in the hot, dense gas that condenced at its center. Our Sun was born. The planets were formed from the remaining disc of material still swirling around our new-born Sun. The largest four of our planets were composed of mainly hydrogen as well as helium. They and the Sun are relics of protostellar material that existed 4.6 billion years ago. The impurities went to form the terrestrial planets. This website is an overview of the history, mythology, and current scientific knowledge of the planets, moons and other objects in our solar system. Each page has my text and NASA 's images, some have sounds and movies, most provide references to additional related information. All eight planets can be seen with a small telescope; or binoculars. And large observatories continue to provide much useful information. But the possibility of getting up close with interplanetary spacecraft has revolutionized planetary science. Very little of this site would have been possible without the space program Nevertheless, there's a lot that you can see with very modest equipment or even with just your own eyes. Past generations of people found beauty and a sense of wonder contemplating the night sky. Today's scientific knowledge further enhances and deepens that experience. And you can share in it by simply going out in the evening and looking up The IAU has changed the definition of "planet" so that Pluto no longer qualifies. There are now officially only eight planets in our solar system. Of course this change in terminology does not affect what's actually out there. In the end, it's not very important how we classify the various objects in our solar system. What is important is to learn about their physical nature and their histories.

NASA is celebrating the Year of the Solar System! Spanning a Martian year (23 months), numerous missions will encounter their targets—the Moon and Mars, Mercury and Jupiter, and even comets and asteroids! It’s an unprecedented time in planetary sciences as we learn about new worlds and make new discoveries! Join the exploration at http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/yss/ People have been watching planets, moons, and comets wander amongst the stars for millennia. Yet it was always "look, don't touch" until 1969, when NASA sent two men to Earth's moon – and they came back with lunar rock and soil for scientists to study.
Since those first footsteps, NASA has broadened its reach with an increasingly sophisticated series of explorers that have landed on asteroids, tasted the swirling gases of Jupiter's atmosphere, and collected the breath of the Sun. Just in the past few years, we have:

Select Which Planet Facts Page You want to See: If you are looking for Facts on Space and the Universal in general, then head over to the More Space Facts page So What Defines A Planet? The International Astronomical Union defines a planet as a celestial body that orbits around a star (like our sun) and is big enough that it forms into a shape of a sphere by its own gravity. But a planet cannot be big enough that it can cause thermonuclear fusion. It also has to have a clear orbit with no other bodies of comparable size influencing its gravitational force. Did You Know There Are Two Categories of Planets?

General Information
The planets, most of the satellites of the planets and the asteroids revolve around the Sun in the same direction, in nearly circular orbits. When looking down from above the Sun's north pole, the planets orbit in a counter-clockwise direction. The planets orbit the Sun in or near the same plane, called the ecliptic. The former planet Pluto, and many of its Kuiper Belt neighbours are a special cases in that their orbits are highly inclined and highly elliptical. The axis of rotation for most of the planets is nearly perpendicular to the ecliptic. The exception is Uranus, which is tipped on its side.
The Origin of the Solar System
Five billion years ago a cloud of hot swirling dust and hydrogen gas gave birth to our Sun and planets. As the cloud spun and collapsed inwards it flattened into a central mass with a surrounding disk. Dust and gases in the disk formed small condensations each spinning about its own centre. Gravitation condensed and heated the central mass. Density increased dramatically and [nuclear] fusion began. Energy was released and our Sun flared into existence. The solar wind of the newly ignited Sun blew away leftover dust and gas in the vicinity of the inner condensations, leaving the rocky inner planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. In the outer regions of the disk, the solar wind was weaker. The remaining dust and gas condensed into the larger gaseous planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

Primer on objects in the outer solar system from The Nine Planets multimedia tour of the solar system.

The Kuiper Belt
and
The Oort Cloud
The Kuiper Belt is a disk-shaped region past the orbit of Neptune extending roughly from 30 to 50 AU from the Sun containing many small icy bodies. It is now considered to be the source of the short-period comets. Occasionally the orbit of a Kuiper Belt object will be disturbed by the interactions of the giant planets in such a way as to cause the object to cross the orbit of Neptune. It will then very likely have a close encounter with Neptune sending it out of the solar system or into an orbit crossing those of the other giant planets or even into the inner solar system. There are presently nine known objects orbiting between Jupiter and Neptune (including 2060 Chiron (aka 95 P/Chiron) and 5145 Pholus; see the MPC's list ). The IAU has designated this class of objects as Centaurs . These orbits are not stable. These objects are almost certainly "refugees" from the Kuiper Belt. Their future fate is not known. Some of these show some cometary activity (ie, their images are a little fuzzy indicating the presence of a diffuse coma ). The largest of these is Chiron which is about 170 km in diameter, 20 times larger than

All About the Solar System
The solar system is the home to the sun, nine planets including the Earth , the 158 known moons that orbit those planets, as well as a countless number of other celestial bodies that exist throughout this vast space. Such celestial bodies include things like asteroids meteoroids and comets Though the events leading up to the formation of the solar system are still being debated, is it believed to be more than 4.6 billion years old! The word "solar" is derived from the Latin word for sun , Sol, leading to the term solar system, or the system of the sun. The planets that orbit the sun within the solar system include Mercury Venus Earth Mars ... Neptune , and the smallest planet of Pluto . Jupiter is by far the largest with an overall mass of more than three times that of the Earth. The sun itself makes up an estimated 99.86% of the solar system’s total mass. Gain further insight into the solar system by taking advantage of the solar system articles, solar system pictures or other interactive features below.
