    Geography of Somalia
Somalia is located on the east coast of Africa on and north of the Equator and, with Ethiopia and Djibouti, is often referred to as the Horn of Africa. It comprises Italy's former Trust Territory of Somalia and the former British Protectorate of Somaliland (now seeking recognition as an independent state). The coastline extends 2,720 kilometers (1,700 mi.). The northern part of the country is hilly, and in many places the altitude ranges between 900 and 2,100 meters (3,000 ft.-7,000 ft.) above sea level. The central and southern areas are flat, with an average altitude of less than 180 meters (600 ft.). The Juba and the Shebelle Rivers rise in Ethiopia and flow south across the country toward the Indian Ocean. The Shebelle, however, does not reach the sea.

Somalia occupies the tip of a region commonly referred to as the Horn of Africa (because of its resemblance on the map to a rhinoceros' horn) that also includes Ethiopia Eritrea and Djibouti . Somalia's terrain consists mainly of plateaus plains , and highlands . In the far north, however, the rugged east-west ranges of the Karkaar Mountains lie at varying distances from the Gulf of Aden coast. The weather is hot throughout the year, except at the higher elevations in the north. Rainfall is sparse, and most of Somalia has a semiarid-to- arid environment suitable only for the nomadic pastoralism practiced by well over half the population. Only in limited areas of moderate rainfall in the northwest, and particularly in the southwest, where the country's two perennial rivers are found, is agriculture practiced to any extent. The local geology suggests the presence of valuable mineral deposits. Somalia's long coastline (more than 3,300 kilometers)

Somalia is on the total east side of Africa. Somalia is bordered by Djibouti on the northwest, Ethiopia on the west, and Kenya to the southwest. The Indian Ocean surrounds it to the east, and the Gulf of Aden to the north. Somalia lies on and north of the equator as well. Somalia (along with Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Djibouti) is often referred to as the Horn of Africa. This is because of its similarity (on the map) to that of a rhinoceros's horn The terrain of Somalia consists primarily of plateaus, plains, and highlands. It is Africa's easternmost country. Somalia has a land area of 637,540 square kilometers, which happens to be faintly less than the state of Texas. Its coastline, in total, is 3,025 kilometers long. The coastline of Somalia holds a great deal of importance to the rest of its country. It is primarily involved in the possibility of trade with the Middle East and the rest of East Africa for that matter. In the east-west lie the ranges of the Karkaar Mountains. These happen to lie at unstable distances from the coast of the Gulf of Aden. Somalia has a population of around 8,863,338 citizens. However, estimates tend to be quite difficult because of the political situation that is currently taking place in the country. Not to mention the constant nomadic life of the Somalis people (an ethnic group located in the Horn of Africa). The last true and factual census took place in 1975. Most analysts used this estimate as a factual source, but the truth is that Somalia is one of the most rapid growing countries in Africa, and in the entire world, so it is hard to stick to a "solid" answer. Usually, estimates tend to range in-between 10 and 15 million. Close to 25% of the population happen to be settled farmers. The majority of them live on the fertile region located between the Juba and Shebelle rivers (southern Somalia). The rest of the population (about 15% to 20%) is urban.
