MeSH Pharyngitis (pronounced /ˌfærɪnˈdʒaɪtɪs/ ) is an inflammation of the throat or pharynx In most cases it is painful and the initial infection can extend for a lengthy time period. It is the most common cause of a sore throat Like many types of inflammation, pharyngitis can be acute chronic . Pharyngitis can result in very large tonsils which cause trouble swallowing and breathing. Pharyngitis can be accompanied by a cough or fever , for example, if caused by an upper respiratory tract infection Most acute cases are caused by viral infections (40–80%), with the remainder caused by bacterial infections, fungal infections, or irritants such as pollutants or chemical substances Treatment of viral causes are mainly symptomatic while bacterial or fungal causes may be amenable to antibiotics and anti-fungal respectively.

Sore Throat - An Overview
Sore throat is a painful condition caused by inflammation in the pharynx. This condition is also known as Pharyngitis. Very often it is accompanied by tonsillitis or infection in the larynx. It occurs more frequently among children but can affect people of any age and sex. Sore throat is caused by both bacteria and viruses. If is caused by bacteria it can be easily cured but if the sore throat is caused by a virus it needs medical attention although there is no fixed and effective prescription medicine for viral sore throat.
Sore Throat Causes
The pharynx is prone to infection and in most cases and is the first area to be affected by viruses responsible for a number of contagious illnesses. It happens when a person inhales and while doing so a virus or a bacterium suspended in the dust gets settled in the pharynx leading to sore throat. There are other ways of infection leading to sore throat. If a person touches objects of common use which are hosts to the micro organisms and then touches his eyes or nose, the virus enters into his nasal membrane and then pharynx causing inflammation in the pharynx. These invaders replicate quickly causing inflammation in pharynx and tonsil. Apart from bacteria and virus, there are some other reasons responsible for the sore throat. First, chain smoking can lead to sore throat condition. Second, inhaling polluted air may result in infection and sore throat. Third, sometimes hay fever of other allergies causes sore throat.

Infections from viruses or bacteria are the main cause of sore throats and can make it difficult to talk and breathe. Allergies and sinus infections can also contribute to a sore throat. If you have a sore throat that lasts for more than five to seven days, you should see your doctor. While increasing your liquid intake, gargling with warm salt water, or taking over-the-counter pain relievers may help, if appropriate, your doctor may write you a prescription for an antibiotic. What are the causes and symptoms of a sore throat? Infections by contagious viruses or bacteria are the source of the majority of sore throats. Viruses: Bacteria: Tonsillitis is an infection of the lumpy-appearing lymphatic tissues on each side of the back of the throat. Infections in the nose and sinuses also can cause sore throats, because mucus from the nose drains down into the throat and carries the infection with it.

SORE THROAT Virtually every child and adult gets a sore throat once or twice a year. What should you do when this happens? Could it be strep throat? How can you tell? Should you go to the doctor? Should you just call your doctor and ask for medicine over the phone? Here is the Dr. Sears guide to diagnosing and treating sore throats in children. CAUSES OF SORE THROAT
  • Viruses. By far, the most common cause of sore throat is any one of a large number of viruses, none of which are treatable with antibiotics. These viruses can cause high fever and very painful sore throat. They can feel just as bad or worse as strep throat.
  • Colds and coughs. The common cold virus can cause a sore throat in addition to its many other symptoms. Coughing can also irritate the throat, and so can post-nasal drip from a cold.
  • Strep throat. This is caused by the strep bacteria, and is treated with antibiotics.
  • Coxsackie virus (hand, foot, and mouth disease). This is a virus that causes high fever and painful canker sores on the throat, cheeks, gums, or lips. Click on mouth sores for more info on this.
