The low-lying coastal zone is narrow for much of that distance, soon giving way to a mountainous escarpment that separates it from the high inland plateau. In some places, notably the province of KwaZulu-Natal in the east, a greater distance separates the coast from the escarpment.
    Size and provinces
South Africa is a medium-sized country, with a total land area of slightly more than 1.2-million square kilometres, making it roughly the same size as Niger, Angola, Mali and Colombia. It is one-eighth the size of the US, twice the size of France and over three times the size of Germany. South Africa measures some 1 600km from north to south, and roughly the same from east to west.

About the geography of South Africa with interesting South Africa geography facts and information about the lay of our land
    http://www.south-africa-tours-and-travel.com/geography-of-south-africa.html
Geography of South Africa,...the lay of our land.
The geography of South Africa is dominated by a high plateau in the interior, surrounded by a low-lying coastal zone.
At the inland perimeter of the coastal lowlands, the land rises abruptly to form a series of mountain ranges separating it from the high plateau.
These mountains, known as the Great Escarpment, vary between 2,000 meters and 3,300 meters in elevation.
Each of the dominant land features, the inland plateau, the encircling mountain ranges, and the coastal lowlands, exhibits a wide range of variation in topography and in natural resources.
