South Africa : History
Nelson Mandela, South Africa's most popular anti-apartheid leader, had witnessed the rise and decline of apartheid firsthand. In the mid-1980s, after more than twenty years in prison for opposing apartheid, he assumed a central role in helping to end it. Government and opposition leaders met for talkstentative ones at first, and then with greater confidence and amid more publicityand they agreed on a general approach to political reform. Four years of difficult and uneven progress, amid escalating violence and competing political pressures, finally paid off in 1994, when South Africa held its first multiracial democratic elections. And while both sides could claim some of the success in achieving this historic goal, both sides also faced even greater challenges in trying to establish a stable multiracial society in the decades ahead. South Africa History - Colonial expansion
As the colonists began moving east, they encountered the Xhosa-speaking people living in the region that is today's Eastern Cape. A situation of uneasy trading and more or less continuous warfare began to develop.
By this time, the second half of the 18th century, the colonists - mainly of Dutch, German and French Huguenot stock - had begun to lose their sense of identification with Europe. The Afrikaner nation was coming into being.
As a result of developments in Europe, the British took the Cape over from the Dutch in 1795. Seven years later, the colony was returned to the Dutch government, only to come under British rule again in 1806, recaptured because of the alliance between Holland and Napoleon.
The initially somewhat cautious regulations aimed at ameliorating the conditions under which, for instance, Khoi servants were employed, caused discontent and even open rebellion among the colony's white inhabitants.
South Africa History - The Cape frontier wars
At the same time, British military strength began to tell in the conflict with the Xhosa. In 1820, some 5 000 newly arrived British settlers were placed on the eastern frontier as a supposed defensive buffer against the Xhosa - a strategy that failed when many of them gave up the struggle with uncooperative land and turned to other occupations in Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown.

By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman As one of Africa's most economically important countries, South Africa and its history have been marked by hundreds of years of power struggles between European settlers and native peoples. In its 500 years of modern history, South Africa has seen the arrival of Dutch settlers, an occupation and rule of British settlers, fierce battles between native Zulu tribes and the settlers and, most recently, social and political struggles between South Africa's white and black populations.
Archaeology shows that humans have occupied South Africa since at least two million years ago, when South African natives painted images of prehistoric life on cave walls. The prehistoric paintings there are regarded among historians and archeologists as some of the finest examples of prehistoric art.
South Africa's location at the southern tip of the African continent made it an important point for European traders sailing back and forth to India. Bartholomew Diaz, a Portuguese explorer, was the first European to set foot on South African soil when he landed at Mossel Bay in 1488. He was followed by other European explorers, including the famed Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama.

The history of Johannesburg, South Africa
History of the largest city in Southern Africa - that is Johannesburg.

The city of Johannesburg is a bustling hive of activity and is unquestionably the unofficial commercial capital of South Africa. It is in fact the "official" capital of one of South Africa's nine provinces, Gauteng. Johannesburg became a city in 1928, but it had been set up as a town as early as 1886 when 980 stands on land, previously owned by the South African government was auctioned off. The land had been a farm that was called Randjeslaagte. This new, prospective town was called Johannesburg - named after two commissioners, Johannes Rissik and Christaan Johannes Joubert, who had confirmed the discovery of gold in the area by George Harrison. Till the present day, Johannesburg remembers these people in history in the form of street names and parks. Rissik, Harrison and Commissioner streets are three of the busiest streets in Johannesburg, and Joubert Park is an area on the outskirts of the immediate city centre.
