Archeologists find oldest solar observatory in the Americas
Yale University
March 1, 2007

Archeologists from Yale and the University of Leicester have identified an ancient solar observatory at Chankillo, Peru as the oldest in the Americas with alignments covering the entire solar year, according to an article in the March 2 issue of Science.
Recorded accounts from the 16th century A.D. detail practices of state-regulated sun worship during Inca times, and related social and cosmological beliefs. These speak of towers being used to mark the rising or setting position of the sun at certain times in the year, but no trace of the towers has ever been found. This paper reports the earliest structures that support those writings.

Related articles Lost civilization found in Peru . Explorers have found ruins of a little known civilization deep in the cloud forests of the Peruvian Amazon. The Chachapoya, as the group is known, was a fierce tribe that battled the mighty Inca empire before the arrival of European conquistadors in the 16th century.

    Ancient cities: Archeological lessons

    by Pamela Mercier
There are many surprising things to learn from archaeological excavations. Cultures ebb and flow and often leave evidence of their passing in the same areas as previous cultures. The search for the location of ancient cities, whether based on extra-historical texts like the Bible,or other ancient writings, reveal many layers of information. People built their cities on the ruins of older cities, so when excavating, much is revealed about cultures going back in time to the era first looked for. The finds at archaeological digs can also show where cultures may have originally come from based on findings from other sites in other countries. It is accepted that cities are where one would find out the most about ancient peoples. First because the culture has advanced enough to provide the necessities of life for large groups of people to congregate in a particular place. They have moved behond the nomad and subsistance agricultural eras. The agricultural advancement is strong enough to support a larger population that can then focus on evolving other areas of civilization. The location of the city determined it's growth as well. Most of the major ancient cities had access to travel by water, or were located on a main trade route. In this way, interaction with other cultures was fostered as trade grew. Goods that were not locally grown or made were more accesible to people living in or near metropolitan areas. Diets could also change as the foods and spices from other areas in the world became more readily available.
