The program provides rent payment subsidy to eligible families or individuals to help them afford market rents and provides greater choice to low-income families in South Carolina. At present, this program operates in the following counties only: Clarendon, Colleton, Dorchester, Fairfield, Kershaw, Lee, and Lexington Counties. Participants may be individuals or families . Applicants must have a gross income below the current HUD program standard, with income limits based on family size and county of residence. Any person, 18 years or older, or a family with a yearly income lower than the amount set by HUD may be eligible. The following three types of applicants receive priority on the waiting list. All others are based on when they applied: Elderly (62 years or older) who are heads of household, or their spouse. Section 502 Program-Insured: A single family housing direct loan program that provides opportunities for very low- and low-income families and individuals to purchase, construct or rehabilitate their own homes with a direct loan from Rural Development.
