Liberal Opinion Archive print e-mail Political Parties and Ideological Mainstreams By Ronald Meinardus
It is a fundamental insight that more than one solution is available for any given societal problem. How and with what recipe a government chooses to tackle a political, economic or social challenge is strongly determined by ideological inclinations. Basically, we can differentiate between three political paradigms socialism, conservatism and liberalism. In pluralistic democracies, these three mainstreams (or combinations of the three) tend to be represented in competing political parties in one form or the other.
In South Korea, geography remains a stronger political force than ideology. The voters' decision on election day is not so much determined by ideological preference, but by regional criteria. I will never forget that not-so-funny political joke with which a Korean friend explained to me this phenomenon shortly after I had come to Seoul many years ago. "(Former political leader) Kim Dae-jung could nominate even a dog as a candidate for mayor in his hometown in the southwest of the peninsula, and the people would vote for it."
Importantly, all major political forces in South Korea agree that political regionalism is not compatible with a modern democratic order and must be overcome. Fortunately, there are indications that traditional voting patterns along geographical lines are weakening due to ongoing urbanization and modernization.

    Summary of Korea's Geography
    Korea's Geography LAND
Korea lies adjacent to China and Japan. The northern border of Korea is formed by the Amnokkang (Yalu) and Tuman-gang (Tumen) rivers which separate it from Manchuria. A 16-kilometer segment of the Tuman-gang river to the east also serves as a natural border with Russia. The west coast of the Korean Peninsula is bounded by the Korea Bay to the north and the Yellow Sea to the south; the east coast is bounded by the East Sea. Two hundred kilometers separate the peninsula from eastern China. The Japanese islands of Honshu and Kyushu are located 206 kilometers to the southeast, just across the Korea Strait. Because of its unique geographical location, Chinese culture filtered into Japan through Korea; a common cultural sphere of Buddhism and Confucianism was thus established between the three countries.

    Geography
South Korea Table of Contents The Korean Peninsula extends for about 1,000 kilometers southward from the northeast part of the Asian continental landmass. The Japanese islands of Honshu and Kyushu are located some 200 kilometers to the southeast across the Korea Strait; the Shandong Peninsula of China lies 190 kilometers to the west. The west coast of the peninsula is bordered by the Korea Bay to the north and the Yellow Sea to the south; the east coast is bordered by the Sea of Japan (known in Korea as the East Sea). The 8,640- kilometer coastline is highly indented. Some 3,579 islands lie adjacent to the peninsula. Most of them are found along the south and west coasts. The northern land border of the Korean Peninsula is formed by the Yalu and Tumen rivers, which separate Korea from the provinces of Jilin and Liaoning in China. The original border between the two Korean states was the thirty-eighth parallel of atitude. After the Korean War, the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) formed the boundary between the two. The DMZ is a heavily guarded, 4,000-meter-wide strip of land that runs along the line of cease-fire, the Demarcation Line, from the east to the west coasts for a distance of 241 kilometers (238 kilometers of that line form the land boundary with North Korea). The total land area of the peninsula, including the islands, is 220,847 square kilometers. Some 44.6 percent (98,477 square kilometers) of this total, excluding the area within the DMZ, constitutes the territory of the Republic of Korea. The combined territories of North Korea and South Korea are about the same size as the state of Minnesota. South Korea alone is about the size of Portugal or Hungary, and is slightly larger than the state of Indiana.

While the annual temperature varies from 5 degree C to 14 degree C.
Korea Peninsula is often referred to as the land of diversified floral region . Pak Man Kyu published a numbered list of Korean plants in 1946. According to the list there are 1,102 genera, 201 families, 3,347 species, 50 subspecies, higher plants 168 which also includes pteridophytes , 1,102 varieties of total plants in Korea. It also means that in the country vascular plants of 4,500 kinds, 400 endemics also grows.
Warm Temperate Vegetation : High annual temperature is ideal for the growth of different species of flora on the offshore islands of Ullungdo, Chejudo and Sohuksando. Like in Chejudo, about 70 kinds of broad leaf evergreens grows here like Bladhia villoso Thunb, Camellia japonica Linne. Herbal plants also grow in this region.
