Currency (US$) Busan South Korea Geography According to South Korea geography, the country covers an area of 98,480 square kilometers, around 44 percent of the total Korean peninsula. Located in Eastern Asia, South Korea lies on the southern half of the Korean peninsula sharing a land border only with North Korea. It is a 238 kilometers border along the Korean Demilitarized Zone which is a 4,000 meter wide strip of land running along the Demarcation Line. A study of the geography of South Korea shows that the land is covered by three water bodies. To the east is the Sea of Japan or the East Sea, to the west is the Yellow Sea, and to the south is the South China Sea. These three seas together share a border of 2,413 kilometers with South Korea. The south and the west have an irregular coastline. One of the important features of the South Korea geography is the large number of islands. Situated in the southwestern corner, Jeju is the largest island with a land area of 1,825. The other major islands are Ulleung and Ganghwa. The South Korean geography holds a very important position as a bridge between China and the Japanese archipelago.

South Korea: GEOGRAPHY

GEOGRAPHY Location: The Republic of Korea occupies the southern half of the Korean Peninsula on the northeastern corner of the Asian continent. North Korea lies to the north, and Japan is located to the southeast, across the Korea Strait. Size: South Korea occupies nearly 45 percent of the land area of the Korean Peninsula, or 98,190 square kilometers of land area and 290 square kilometers of water area. Land Boundaries: The border with North Korea is marked by a 4-kilometer-wide Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), at the center of which is the Military Demarcation Line. The DMZ extends 238 kilometers over land and three kilometers over the sea. Disputed Territory: A long-standing dispute with Japan continues concerning which nation exercises sovereignty over a group of tiny islands located off the east coast of South Korea. The South Korean government refers to these islands as Tokto (or Dokdo), but other sources refer to them variously as the Liancourt Rocks, the Hornet Rocks, or Takeshima (the name the Japanese colonial government used). Length of Coastline: The total coastline measures 2,413 kilometers. The west coast is on Korea Bay and the Yellow Sea (sometimes referred to as the West Sea). The east coast is on what Koreans call the East Sea but which is recognized by the United Nations and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names as the Sea of Japan.

The city is nearly equidistant from the southeastern port of Busan and the northwestern town of Sinuiju on the China-North Korea border. The city is also conveniently located in the middle of several major northeast Asian metropolises such as Tokyo, Beijing, Shanghai and Taipei. The city is some 30.3 km from north to south and 36.78 km east to west. Its total area is 605.41 square kilometers, making it a truly large metropolis. Seoul sits in a natural basin. Surrounding the city are a number of peaks of 500 meters or more above sea level. These peaks have historically played the role of a natural fortress, providing the city with protection from invasion. In fact, the mountains were a key reason behind the location's selection as the national capital. Among the major peaks surrounding Seoul are Mt. Bukhansan (Seoul's highest peak at 836m), Mt. Dobongsan (740m), Mt. Inwangsan (338m) and Mt. Gwanaksan (629m). Other peaks include Mt. Bugaksan (342m), the guardian peak protecting the presidential palace of Cheong Wa Dae, and Namsan (232m), which historically guarded the old city of Seoul to the south. To the west of the city is the Gyeonggi Plain, one of Korea's largest flatland areas and one of the country's most agriculturally productive regions. The Hangang River bisect the city east to west as it flows in a broad "W" pattern. In the old days, the river was home to flourishing river ports at Mapo and Ddukseom and ferry terminals at Noryangjin, Yanghwado, Hannamdo, Songpado and Gwangnaru, but with the development of overland transportation and the construction of large bridges across the river, the city's ports and ferries have disappeared.
