Tracking Fleet Continues Rehearsal
one of four ships making up China's fleeting of tracking ships by Wei Long
Tokyo - Feb 20, 2002
China's fleet of four space tracking vessels continued their rehearsal for the next Shenzhou launch despite ongoing delays with what will be the third test launch of China's future manned spacecraft. Report of the exercise activities appeared in the People's Liberation Army Daily Feb 10. The Yuanwang fleet (Yuanwang means "Long View") continued to rehearse up until days before the arrival of the Lunar New Year of the Horse a week ago. PLA Daily reported that the fleet successfully completed testings of several domestically developed systems in recent days, and the tracking vessels were ready to perform space mission tracking tasks. In order to meet the requirement of increasing tracking and commanding capabilities at sea, in the past few years the fleet has focused on networking research to support tracking and commanding, navigation, power, and equipment protection. One of the systems that the fleet has developed is the navigation command system network, which is equipped with an advanced electronic ocean map system.

Individual installations by nine international artists who probe "Inner and Outer Space" add up to one of the Mattress Factory's best exhibitions to date. The North Side venue is no stranger to artists who transgress routine expectations, aesthetic and metaphysical, to create encompassing experiences that position visitors to imagine the world anew. For this show, says guest curator Dara Meyers-Kingsley, "the 'inner and outer space theme' the conceptual underpinning for the exhibition not only relates to the form and content of the work but also an approach to artistic practice." The works spill through floors, out windows, into the parking area, onto a Jumbotron and arrive via e-mail. One was completed with the help of local artisans.

In September 1967, the European Space Operations Centre was formally inaugurated in Darmstadt, Germany, to provide satellite control for the European Space Research Organisation, today known as ESA. ESOC began just a decade after the 1957 start of the space age, when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the first artificial satellite.
When the Sputnik news hit the world's press in 1957, it was hailed as the achievement of a dream, the first tentative step by mankind into the cosmos. Humanity would no longer be stuck on our home planet, and we could now travel - if only robotically - in realms previously reserved for Gods and mythic figures.
ESOC 1967, recently renamed from ESDAC (European Space Data Centre) It was also a shock, as the United States and its Western Allies - locked in Cold War competition with the Soviets - suddenly realised how far behind their space efforts had fallen. Political leaders in the US and Europe quickly voted huge budgets to close the space technology gap. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the globe's two competing geopolitical blocs used rockets, ever more powerful boosters and increasingly sophisticated satellites as their proxy weapons to achieve superiority. The competition culminated, finally, with the race to put a human on the Moon, won handily by the Americans in 1969.

Scale Aircraft Modelling 1997-03
WHEN the USAF took delivery of its first Boeing KC-135 tankers (described in Scale Aircraft Modelling Volume 17 Number 11) in April 1957, it recognised that the aircraft would lend itself well to be adapted for other specialist duties. As well as the transport versions which entered service in 1961 (also dealt with in Volume 17 Number 11), the basic airframe has since been modified to fulfil roles such as airborne command posts, launch control centres, radio relay links, strategic reconnaissance, test and research work, weather reconnaissance, space mission tracking and communications, training, and, most recently, treaty verification duties under the 'Open Skies' agreement. Around 130 individual aircraft have served in these special mission roles over the last 36 years, under a range of designations. Of these, only about a quarter were produced 'from new', the rest being conversions from the basic KC-135 A tanker or C-135A and B transport versions.

Enough said. When I thought about using the Race, Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis slammed me in the face. They would be the perfect foil for the very conservative Lizardians (as I have nicknamed them) without necessarily killing them off. However as you've seen the threat was always there with the SGC. Despite my liking the Race, they had absolutely no compunctions in nuking Earth to ash if it suited their will and if they could get away with it. Earth was a threat to them and the only reason they didn't do it in the series is because they needed the planet for their colonization fleet. However throughout the entire series that was an option for them as they believed it to be necessity of survival against the Tosevite humans. Ah, well. The SGC would have and could have stopped them most effectively. And they had enough experience to keep from wiping Atvar and his people out.
