Statement of Purpose
For one brief shining moment the world paused in wonder. The typewriters in offices across America halted as millions watched the drama unfold. Children stared in awe at the spectacle. Older citizens, who were children when the Wright Brothers made their first flight, watched the culmination of the dream. There was a pause, a crackle of static, and the radio transmission, "Houston: Tranquility base here. The Eagle has landed."
Neil A. Armstrong
Commander for Apollo 11, was the first man to walk on the moon on July 20, 1969. Neil Armstrong's one small step on July 20, 1969, was truly a giant leap for mankind. It began seventy years earlier in the Dayton, Ohio bicycle shop of Wilbur and Orville Wright. In one lifetime, man lifted himself from the sands of Kitty Hawk to the lunar dust of the Sea of Tranquility. The first gallery features artifacts from early air achievements and reveals Ohio's significant role in the development of flight. The hot air balloon era is represented by a balloon basket and trophy won by Dayton balloonist Warren Rasor. The large airframe suspended from the ceiling is from the Toledo II, the first manned and powered airship to grace New York City skies. A reconstructed Wright Model G Aero-boat, built in Dayton and flown from the Miami River in 1913, is an unusual reminder of the pioneering accomplishments of Orville and Wilbur Wright from Dayton, Ohio.

History, orbits, composition, ways comets are studied, relation to meteor showers. Comets Halley, Shoemaker-Levy 9. From the National Air and Space Museum.
http://www.nasm.si.edu/ceps/etp/comets/
For most of recorded history, comets have played a unique role in culture and science. However, it was really only about 500 years ago that the serious, methodological, standardized observation of comets began, leading slowly to our view of comets as planetary 'worlds' orbiting the sun. After centuries of building our picture of comets through distant observations from Earth, we finally got close-up pictures of cometary nuclei with spacecraft in 1986 (comet 1P/Halley) and in 2001 (comet 19/P Borrelly). Our Nation's Fourth Guided Nuclear Missile Submarine 1958 - 1964

Introduction:
U.S.S. GROWLER was a pioneer when she departed on her first Nuclear Deterrent Patrol in 1960. Armed with Regulus nuclear cruise missiles, she helped usher in a new era of strategic defense. She was one of the predecessors which led to the deployment of a large fleet of sophisticated submarines armed with Polaris nuclear missiles. The concept of strategic deterrent was revolutionized when these missiles were sent out to sea in large numbers. Hidden deep in the oceans, they were nearly undetectable. Even more significant, underwater-positioned missiles greatly reduced the risk of nuclear attack against the U.S. mainland. It was suicide for a hostile power to strike at population centers while retaliatory missiles were poised beneath the sea. Prior to GROWLER and her companions, all of America's strategic nuclear weapons had been based on land, relatively close to people. Sending the missiles out to the sea on submarines like GROWLER proved to be the most effective nuclear deterrent ever used. All of the world powers followed the example, thereby greatly reducing the possibility of all-out war.
