Toledo, Spain, the capital of Toledo province in New Castile. It is in central Spain, 40 miles (64 km) southwest of Madrid. Toledo is situated on a rocky bluff, surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River. Three bridges, two of which date from medieval times, span the Tagus. Because of its historical and cultural significance, Toledo has been made a national monument. Modern construction is prohibited, and the city looks today much as it did in the 16th century. The Cathedral, begun in 1226 and mixing Gothic with Moorish, Renaissance, and Baroque styles, is one of the largest and most beautiful cathedrals in Spain. On the highest point in the city stands a replica of the Alcázar. The original structure, built as a fortress in the Middle Ages and reconstructed in the 16th century as a palace for Charles V, was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. Its ruins are maintained as a monument to the Franco forces who defended it during a 67-day siege. Casa del Greco, a 16th-century mansion near the site where El Greco once lived, is a museum displaying his works and those of other Spanish artists. The provincial museum, containing archeological exhibits and paintings, is housed in a 16th-century Renaissance building.

Spain - geography and climate
by John Muddeman
Mainland Spain, with its mainly warm and dry southern Mediterranean coasts, cooler, wetter and wilder northern Atlantic coasts, lower southern and higher northern inland plains and a Mediterranean habitats in Extremadura series of high mountain ranges including the Pyrenees, Cantabrican range, Sistema Central and Sierra Nevada amongst others, supports a massive diversity of habitats Manzanares el Real, Sistema Central Sunset over ricefields, Extremadura coastline jutting out between the Bay of Biscay and the 'true' Atlantic. The climate, combined with relatively low human population (approx. 52 million) and only relatively recent modernisation have left the country with a legacy of currently relatively intact habitats. This includes some of the best agricultural habitats for wildlife in Europe and huge areas of man-modified landscape of numerous types still attractive to a wide range of species. The pressures on these are now intense however, with ever more habitats and sites disappearing or being damaged under the euphemism of 'progress', especially under modern agricultural and building policies. Fuerteventura , Gran Canaria and Tenerife), just a few kilometres away from many of these sites, wildlife often still abounds for those willing to take a look.

When you think of Spain you'll most likely picture bullfights, beaches and flamenco dancing, but although these do capture the very essence of Spain, this vibrant country has a whole lot more to offer.
Spain is situated on the Iberian peninsula, and covers four-fifths of it, leaving one fifth of the peninsula to its neighbour, Portugal. The Pyrenees Mountains separate Spain from the rest of Europe, and the Strait of Gibraltar separates the country from north Africa, by just 14km (9 miles). The northern coast borders the Bay of Biscay and has a perpetual cloak of fine mist: it is often called the Costa Verde, or the Green Coast. The southern coast is extremely popular and is aptly named the Costa del Sol, or Coast of the Sun. Spain's capital is Madrid, a city with a rich cultural heritage and a friendly atmosphere. Spain's other main city, Barcelona, is a liberal and exciting city. Spanish art and architecture give this country a unique ambience. Be sure to spend time seeing Gaudi's architectural wonders and some of the country's splendid cathedrals, many of which were built over mosques from the time of the Moorish Occupation, which left an indelible imprint on Spanish culture.

It is one of the farthest west in Europe. In fact, if you travel west from the northwestern coast of Spain, you will end up in the Atlantic Ocean. Spain is a peninsula. What is a peninsula? It is a piece of land surrounded on three sides by water. To Spain's north is the Bay of Biscay. To Spain's south is the Mediterranean Sea. And where there's water, there are beaches, right? This is true in Spain. Spain has lots of beaches. Many of Spain's beaches are world famous. People from all over the world especially enjoy Spain's southern beaches.

Obregón (wikimedia commons) Bordering France, Andorra and the magnificent Pyrenees to the north, Portugal to the west, and surrounded on three sides by the Bay of Biscay, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean, Spain and its islands really have some fascinating geography and some great driving experiences in your campervan hire or motorhome rental vehicle.   The central region of Spain south of Barcelona to Alicante.  Of course the very centre of Spain is where you will find its capital Madrid.  The third largest city in Europe, Madrid’s historic centre is best explored on foot.  The city’s best features are the grand boulevards of the 18th and 19th centuries and the small street of medieval quarter packed with shops bars and restaurants.  Valencia is another of Spain’s beautiful cities and the cathedral is claimed to be where the Holy Grail is stored (amongst other places) as well as the hemispheric glass structure of the Arts and Science Park. The beautiful south, totally different, with reminders of its European history alongside Moroccan influences.  White washed mountain villages’ mix with cities such as Cordoba with its winding streets and the Mezquita or great mosque built inside the cathedral, Granada with the Alhambra Palace and Seville famous for flamenco, Carmen and Don Juan as well as a fantastic cathedral. The area around Cadiz, Gibraltar and the area to the south west is somewhere you could spend weeks exploring before relaxing in Jerez, home of sherry for those who like a little tipple.
