    A Brief History of Spain
From Atapuerca to King Juan Carlos in 500 words. Text by Mark Little. Most of the Iberian peninsula has been populated since prehistoric times. Early evidence of human habitation unearthed at the Atapuerca site in northern Spain are some 800,000 years old. Modern man made his appearance around 35,000 BC. Sometime around 4000 BC, much of Spain was settled by the Iberians, arriving from the east. The Celts arrived later, settling in the northern third of the peninsula. Bronze age civilization flourished in the south, culminating with the Tartessian civilization around Seville (1000-500 BC). Around 1100 BC, Phoenician seafarers from present-day Lebanon set up trading colonies in Cadiz and elsewhere along the Spanish coast. Phocaean Greeks also traded along the north-eastern coast. With the fall of Phoenicia, the Iberian peninsula came under the rule of Carthage (present day Tunisia), but was occupied by Rome following the Punic Wars. The Romans held sway in Iberia for six centuries, laying the foundations for Spanish language and culture. Following the fall of the western Roman empire in the fifth century AD, Spain was ruled by the Visigoths, a Germanic people who had migrated from central Europe. In 711, the Muslims of northern Africa launched an invasion across the Strait of Gibraltar, occupying most of the peninsula within a few years. Their presence lasted more than seven centuries, though the Christian kingdoms to the north increased in power over the generations, gradually driving the Moors southwards. The last Moorish kingdom, Granada (the eastern half of present-day Andalusia), was conquered in 1492.

    SPAIN: History
Prehistorical Times The oldest historical findings made in Spain date of about 30000 to 50000 b.C. Among the most important remains of this period are the caves Cova Negra Játiva ) and Piñar (Granada). The Celt-Iberian Spain The Greeks referred to the original inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula as Iberians. There are, however, several different populations. According to archaeological, anthropological and genetic research, the Iberians should have arrived to the peninsula at the time of the Neolithic (5000 - 3000 BC).
Some scientists believe that they came originally from the eastern Mediterranean, others believe that they were related to the founders of the megalithic culture (UK, Ireland, France), of which there are numerous findings also in Spain.
The most advanced Iberians were undoubtedly the Tartessos , who founded the oldest Western-European high culture, and their descendants "Turdetanos" and "Turdulos".

This unofficial site for the Marine Corps of Spain has some history and pictures of interest to Spanish Colonial reenactors, especially the uniform pictures at the end of the page.
Some history... H aving little room in this page, making a historical synthesys of the of the Spanish Marine Corps is quite a hard task. But it can be said, no fantasies at all, that the personal log of a Spanish Marine from centuries XVI to XX is an extract of the Spanish History.
T he Navy's proper mobility make their Marines to be, in fact, in each and every war action.
MIGUEL DE CERVANTES SAAVEDRA (universal writer of Don Quixote) soldier in Lepanto; LOPE DE FIGUEROA, MARTIN ALVAREZ and an endless list of distinguished men, served among the ranks of the Spanish Marines. After 461 years of history this Log still has not found its end.
F or more than four centuries, the Infantería de Marina (Spanish Marines) passed through several stages, and its history can be divided into five periods of time, each and every period determined by a specific mission.
FIRST PERIOD T he Infantería de Armada (Navy Infantery) was created by Carlos I in 1537, when he permanently assigned the Compañías Viejas del Mar de Nápoles (Naples Old Sea Companys) to the Escuadras de Galeras del Mediterráneo (Mediterranean Galley Squadrons) . But it was Felipe II who sttled today's concept of Landing force. This was pure Naval Power projection ashore by forces coming from ships and able to fight, not been downgraded by the fact of been based on board. This is the period of the famous Tercios (literaly "One Third", due to its organisation: one third of musketeers, one third of spearers and the left third of pikers):

The history of Spain is one of the most passionate histories you may find. The modern world would not have been what it is today if the Spanish had not gotten in the way. A small territory sitting on the Western extremity of Europe, Spain has accrued a history so interesting, it greatly differs from the rest of the countries of the European continent. Despite its glorious past, Spain eventually became victim of its own wealth and the empire that was once in expansion began to decline: the Spanish economical and political decadence era began with continuous exterior foreign wars and civil revolts. The independence achieved by the Spanish territories of the Americas and the 19th century loss of the last Spanish overseas colonies (Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Philippines) ended up shaping the world into the one we know today.
