Spain History
The oldest historical findings made in Spain date of about 30000 to 50000 b.C. Modern humans in the form of Cro-Magnons made his appearance in the Iberian Peninsula from north of the Pyrenees some 35,000 years ago. Among the most important remains of this period are the caves Cova Negra (Játiva) and Piñar (Granada). The more conspicuous sign of prehistoric human settlements are the famous paintings in the northern Spanish Altamira (cave), which were done ca. 15,000 BCE.
The first to appear were the Iberians, a Libyan people, who probably arrived to the peninsula from the north of Africa. In fact, sometime around 4000 BC, much of Spain was settled by the Iberians. Tartessos, the earliest urban culture documented and probably an Iberian tribe, founded an important kingdom of high culture ca. 1100 BCE. in the valley of Guadalquivir river, in the south of Spain.
The Celts (a typically Aryan people) arrived around 1200 b.C., settling in the northern third of the peninsula. Later, from the merging of the two races there arose a new one: The Celtiberians. This new mixed race divided into several tribes (Cantabrians, Asturians, Lusitanians) and gave their name to their respective homelands.
By 1100 b.C. Phoenicians arrived to the peninsula, attracted by mining wealth, and founded colonies and a number of trading posts along the coast, the most important being that of Gadir (today's Cadiz). The Greeks settled along the Mediterranean coast, and the Carthaginians would follow suit, occupying the Balearic Islands at the same time.

The streets have no name: The windy corridors of Tarragona's Old Town - photos by Karina Halley Tarragona, Spain: History and Heart on the Mediterranean
    By Karina Halle
Tarragona is an ancient Spanish town on the shores of the Mediterranean, about 56 miles (90 km) from Barcelona and 332 miles (534 km) from Madrid.
    Why Go
To top it off, Tarragona has stayed away from the mass tourism that frequents most of Spain, making it one of the best-kept secrets in the country. Until now. When To Go Tarragona is a great place to visit all year-round. In spring and fall, the weather is warm and the ocean temperatures are bearable. During the summer it can get stiflingly hot with high humidity but offshore breezes can provide a refreshing lift. In the winter months the town slows down but the lack of tourists and mild temperatures make it a unique and pleasant experience. Getting There and Around There is a local bus service in Tarragona, which services the city and its environs although it runs less frequently in the evening and on weekends. Check with the tourist office for a complete schedule.

Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating Civil War (1936-39). In the second half of the 20th century, it has played a catch-up role in the western international community. Continuing concerns are large-scale unemployment and the Basque separatist movement. History
Spain Table of Contents THE NATIONAL HISTORY of Spain dates back to the fifth century A.D., when the Visigoths established a Germanic successor state in the former Roman diocese of Hispania. Despite a period of internal political disunity during the Middle Ages, Spain nevertheless is one of the oldest nation-states in Europe. In the late fifteenth century, Spain acquired its current borders and was united under a personal union of crowns by Ferdinand of Aragon (Spanish, Aragon) and Isabella of Castile (Spanish, Castilla). For a period in the sixteenth and the seventeenth centuries, Portugal was part of that Iberian federation. In the sixteenth century, Spain was the foremost European power, and it was deeply involved in European affairs from that period to the eighteenth century. Spain's kings ruled provinces scattered across Europe. The Spanish Empire was global, and the influence of Spanish culture was so pervasive, especially in the Americas, that Spanish is still the native tongue of more than 200 million people outside Spain. Recurrent political instability, military intervention in politics, frequent breakdowns of civil order, and periods of repressive government have characterized modern Spanish history. In the nineteenth century, Spain had a constitutional framework for parliamentary government, not unlike those of Britain and France, but it was unable to develop institutions capable of surviving the social, economic, and ideological stresses of Spanish society.

Spain History
Even today, modern Spanish cities maintain an undeniable influence of structure and culture from their neighbors across the Mediterranean. The Romans, of course, were the ones that taught the natives the Latin language, but Spain was being colonized far before the Italians ever set foot on it. In fact, it was inhabited before the Romans even existed as a nation. Gaelic, North African and other Germanic peoples all migrated to Spain, and by around 1000 B.C. they had a distinguishing presence on the Iberian Peninsula. With this influx of immigrants, the original natives of Spain were forced to accept the customs and languages of each occupier. Eventually, the Celts from France and the Iberians from North Africa merged into a single society, referenced to as the Celtiberians. These people were originally in occupation of central Spain, but they eventually moved toward the eastern side of the peninsula. With these people thinly spread over the entire region, with Iberians mining metals in the south and other ethnic groups living as simple farmers or shepherds, the Celtiberians still had their differences. For instance, the Celtic culture dominated the northern regions, closer to France, while on the other hand, the Iberian culture was concentrated in the south, towards Africa. The 'lure of the ore' brought many Mediterranean powers to colonize Spain. Aside from Phoenicians and Greeks, hailing from across the sea itself, the most notable visitors were the Carthaginians. While these people from Africa were actually once a Phoenician colony themselves, they did not, by evidence seen today, impose onto the Celtiberians and the other native peoples of the land. They lived together in harmony as the Carthaginians prospered greatly from the trade supplies produced from the deep mines of the Iberian Peninsula.

History
Spain before the Muslim Conquest
Civilization in Spain dates back to the Stone Age. The Basques may be descended from the prehistoric humans whose art has been preserved in the caves at Altamira. They antedated the Iberians , who mixed with Celtic invaders at an early period. Because of its mineral and agricultural wealth and its position guarding the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain was known to the Mediterranean peoples from very early times. The Phoenicians passed through the strait and established (9th cent. B.C. Tarshish ). Later the Carthaginians settled on the east coast and in the Balearic Islands, where Greek colonies also sprang up. In the 3d cent. B.C. , the Carthaginians under Hamilcar Barca began to conquer most of the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearics and established Cartagena as capital.
