The Spanish American War Various Authors Edited By: R. A. Guisepi In the summer of 1898, the United States fought Spain in one of the shortest and most pathetically one-sided wars in modern history. The war represented a powerful resurgence of the same doctrine of Manifest Destiny that had led the United States to expand westward by defeating Mexico in 1846-48. This impulse toward imperialism took place as major European nations were establishing colonies throughout Africa. As a result of the Spanish-American War, the United States became a world power that controlled an empire stretching from the Caribbean Sea to the Far East. The Conflict The war originated in the Cuban struggle for independence from Spain that began in 1895. The extraordinary brutality of the Spanish forces on the island of Cuba was played up in American newspapers and aroused a great deal of sympathy across the United States. In addition the United States had a genuine economic interest in seeing Cuba become independent. Business investments on the island were estimated at 50 million dollars, and trade with Cuban ports was valued at 100 million dollars yearly. Particularly appalling to most Americans were the policies of the Spanish general Valeriano Weyler y Nicolau, nicknamed "the Butcher." He rounded up Cubans who were considered disloyal to Spain and put them in concentration areas near the cities. There they were exposed to the ravages of hunger, disease, and poor sanitation. These facts were graphically depicted in the newspapers owned by William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzerboth of whom were eager for war with Spain.

The strained relations between the United States and Spain at the beginning of 1898, over affairs in Cuba, reached a breaking point in February, when the battleship Main was blown up by the Spaniards at Havana harbor. War was declared soon after, and President McKinley issued a call for volunteers. Thousands of men mostly members of the State National Guards, quickly answered, and in a very short time the government had a completely equipped and highly trained army, ready for the front. The regular army was immediately dispatched to Cuba; and our battleships quickly engaged and destroyed the Spanish fleet under Admiral Cervera in the Cuban waters. Shortly after, Admiral Dewey fought the famous battle of Manila Bay, and Spain’s Navy was a string of the past. The Volunteer Army soon joined with the regulars, and Cuba and Porto Rico were captured, the war ending in the early fall of 1898. Perhaps the largest concentration of troops was at Chicamauga National Park, a short distance from Chattanooga, Tenn. Thousands of National Guard regiment assembled there, including the 2

The author approaches her subject from an interesting perspective. So-called masculine myths have always heavily influenced male roles in both domestic and foreign policy. For all recorded time, the ruling classes constantly produce the so-called 'idle rich," most of whom chose to remain remain comfortable idle, while others, with the benefit of that very idleness begin to question their place in society and the wider world. Some decide that they must play a significant part on the local-to-international stage. Whether Greek, Persian, Chinese, Japanese, Zulu, Roman, Incan or European, some of these patricians of their respective societies will have a driving ambition and will chose a path to leadership and this times means picking up a rock or spear or G4/M16/AK-47 and fighting . Florida and the War for Cuban Independence, 1898
    Rough Riders: Tampa, Florida
In 1898 national attention focused on Florida as the Spanish-American War began. The port city of Tampa served as the primary staging area for U.S. troops bound for the war in Cuba. The arrival of over 30,000 troops, including Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders cavalry unit, changed Tampa from a small town to into a city. Florida, the closest state to the Caribbean and home to a large Cuban immigrant population, became the setting for much of the action in Cuba's fight for independence from Spain.

The Spanish-American War (1898) was a conflict between the United States and Spain that ended Spanish colonial rule in the Americas and resulted in U.S. acquisition of territories in the western Pacific and Latin America.
The war originated in the Cuban struggle for independence from Spain, which began in February 1895. Spain's brutally repressive measures to halt the rebellion were graphically portrayed for the U.S. public by several sensational newspapers, and American sympathy for the rebels rose. The growing popular demand for U.S. intervention became an insistent chorus after the unexplained sinking in Havana harbour of the battleship USS Maine (Feb. 15, 1898; see Maine, destruction of the), which had been sent to protect U.S. citizens and property after anti-Spanish rioting in Havana. Spain announced an armistice on April 9 and speeded up its new program to grant
