How to Successfully Homeschool Your Child with Special Needs
by Lisa Simmons As a researcher, specializing in disability topics, I often get emails from parent or grandparents interested in home schooling their child (grandchild) with special needs. Most recently, I received this message from Joyce: "I would appreciate leads on home schooling Special Needs kids with multiple diagnosis as we will home school our angel after this year of home based Special Education - 8th grade. Getting various sites together and ordering things available to home schooling parents and/or teachers. Any suggestions appreciated. Your site is a real help and inspiration for us at our house!" The reasons parents decide to home school a child with special needs vary: They want their child to be able to learn at their own pace.

HSLDA Media Release April 11, 2000 Home Schoolers Take Special Needs Case to Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals For immediate release April 11, 2000 Contact: Rich Jefferson (540) 338-8663 or media@hslda.org SAN FRANCISCO Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Congress sends money to local school districts to fund special needs education for public and private school students. In California and 11 other states, home schools operate as private schools, and special needs home schoolers receive assistance. If the court rules for the Hooks, the school district will be required to pay for the speech therapy the Hooks family has already purchased, Farris explained. Nationwide, handicapped home schoolers will receive the same treatment as their public and private school counterparts. The school district has argued that a 1992 opinion from the U.S. Department of Education supports its position to deny services. In the letter, the Department said the determination of who is a private school student should be made according to state law. Since home school students are not private school students under Nevada law, the school district denied Christopher services. The Ninth Circuit must decide whether this policy and practice of the school district, in conformity with the DOE letter, contravenes the intent of IDEA, or violates the Equal Protection Clause. The case is important because a number of school districts, and even state departments of education, are excluding home schoolers on this basis.

    Protecting your Special Needs Homeschool
by Valorie Delp More from this Blogger For many children with special needs , homeschooling provides just the right environment for these kids to reach their potential. Homeschools are often significantly more consistent, there are less distractions, and homeschoolers with special needs have the best teachers of all: parents who are intensely interested in seeing their child succeed. However, if your child has been in the special education system, homeschooling legally can be more difficult than for other families. Here are some pointers from HSLDA to protect your legal rights to homeschool your special needs child: Arrange for regular Evaluations and Document Your Child's Progress Regardless of your state's legal statutes (some states, by the way, have specific statutes for legally homeschooling a child with special needsmost, however, do not.) and what is or is not required, YOU need to keep excellent records of what you're doing with your child. You have numerous options for having your child evaluated regularly, including your child's own pediatrician. However, how you have your child evaluated will largely depend on what your child's special needs are. In any case, having your child evaluated by someone that is "qualified" to note the same progress that you're seeing at home, is the first step to take in protecting your right to home school your special needs child.

Parsons and Lewis on Special Needs Homeschoolers in Britain
May 10, 2010 by Milton Gaither International Journal of Inclusive Education 14, no. 1 (February 2010): 67-86. Parsons , research fellow at the University of Birmingham, and Lewis What is pushing these parents away?  The most frequently cited reason was child unhappiness, stress, or depression at school, followed closely by bullying.  Significantly, NO respondents cited a desire to impart moral or religious beliefs to their children. Why did they choose homeschooling?  Mostly for the flexibility and freedom for children to learn at their own pace. Drawbacks?  All but three respondents mentioned cons to their choice, ranging from the cost for materials to loss of free time and increased strain on the mother.  A couple mentioned social disapproval of their decision from outsiders. here (Lisa Rivero) and here (Carrie Winstanley) Posted in Special Education Lisa Rivero homeschooling children with special needs Carrie Winstanley ...
