Inclusive Learning Environments for Students With Special Needs
  • FAQs Search Engine General Information Welcome to a new database of inclusion teaching and learning resources and strategies. This project is funded by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction in Washington State . It is designed to disseminate information related to inclusion resources, best practices, strategies, and research. What Is Inclusion? Inclusion considers that all students are full members of the school community and are entitled to the opportunities and responsibilities that are available to all students in the school. In an inclusive school setting, students with disabilities are provided specially designed instruction in their least restrictive environment (LRE). LRE varies according to the individual needs and goals of each student. In order to determine the LRE, federal laws require that the individualized educational program (IEP) committee first develop the individual goals for the student, then determine how and where the student's goals can be met. May. 5, 2007 12:00 AM Last fall, eighth-grader Nabora Blea came home from Deer Valley Middle School with a proud announcement: She attended a regular classroom all day long.
Nabora, a 14-year-old special-needs student, functions at the third-grade level and was supposed to be in a self-contained special-education class, said her mother, Stephanie Blea. "Her IEP says she can't handle being in a general-education classroom," she said.
But no school official consulted Blea about placement changes in her daughter's individualized education program, or IEP, as required by federal law, she added. advertisement The incident highlights the balancing act faced by Valley school districts, which are required by the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 2004 to provide specialized services to special-needs students while also mainstreaming them into general-education classrooms, a concept known as inclusion.

    Special Needs Students
INCLUSION OF STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS IN THE REGULAR SCHOOL CLASSROOM AND CURRICULUM The purpose of this study is to develop a broad and comprehensive investigation of the inclusion of special needs students in regular classrooms in public schools . Inclusion has been, and continues to be, a hotly debated area in education. Until fairly recently, much of this debate has focused on the ethical issues or social benefits of inclusion. Recently, however, the research is turning toward the efficacy of the process. There are efforts to develop, implement, and share effective administrative, instructional, and assessment strategies that support inclusive environments. What is not present is an effort to asses the effects of inclusion policies on the great majority of the students who do not have special needs, but whose legitimate educational needs may be compromised by inclusion. The movement for the inclusion of special needs students in general classrooms has been reinforced since the 1970s by (a) litigation and (b) laws (e.g., the Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act of 1990, in particular). While the federal laws do not require the full inclusion of special needs students in general classrooms, pressure groups, educational theorists, educational psychologists, school administrators, and others have continually pushed toward the full inclusion of special needs stud

      Are teachers overpaid?
A reader who doesn't support giving Baltimore County teachers a pay raise called this morning with a common assertion: Teachers already earn too much money because they work only 180 days a year, 6 hours or so a day. This reader was calling because he had just read my story from today about last night's school board meeting, where the board voted for a budget that doesn't include pay raises. Teachers are now considering job actions, such as picketing and refusing to do extra work. In Baltimore County, starting pay for a teacher with a bachelor's degree is $42,000. Starting pay for a teacher with a master's degree is just over $43,000. According to Cheryl Bost, who heads up the Teachers Association of Baltimore County, the system's teachers make considerably less than those in neighboring districts. For example, teachers who have a master's degree and have worked in the county for 15 years are ranked 19th out of the state's 24 school systems, Bost has said. What do you think? Are the county's teachers asking for too much? Or do they deserve a pay raise? And what about this reader's claims that teachers have posh assignments because they work 6-hour days and only 180 days a year?

Substitute Teachers and Paraprofessionals... Reasons to Become a Substitute Teacher or Paraprofessional The overriding and most important reason for becoming a substitute teacher or paraprofessional is the desire to work with children and young adults and to share in the joy that comes from the teaching and learning experience. In addition,
    • many people thinking about teaching as a career find that working as a substitute teacher gives them invaluable insights into the teaching profession; some retired teachers want to continue to teach and work with children; many love the flexible work hours and the chance to earn income in a position with an adjustable schedule; and substitutes may choose the age group and schools with which they would like to work.
Expectations for Substitute Teachers and Paraprofessionals
During a regular teacher's or paraprofessional's absence, maintaining as normal a routine as possible, in a climate of respect and caring for the students is essential. Substitute personnel have two major responsibilities: following the regular teacher's lesson plan and goals for the class and maintaining a disciplined, positive classroom in which learning can take place.
