Research in the Laboratory for Plasma Spectrochemistry, Laser Spectroscopy and Mass Spectrometry includes fundamental studies of plasmas used for elemental analysis, aerosol generation and processing, development of new techniques for elemental speciation and application of analytical measurement techniques to environmental and geological problems. On-going experiments range from laser induced fluorescence image detection of individual clouds of atoms and ions produced from a single drop of solution (an atom cloud is shown to the left), to investigation of electrospray and ion spray processes that lead to sampling of intact ions from solutions, to measurement of metal-ligand complexation systems that are important in metal pollutant transport and remediation.
