Short Track Speed Skating
Olympic History Short track speed skating was first introduced as a full medal sport in 1992 at Albertville after having been a demonstration sport at the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary. This exciting sport has proved extremely popular with spectators ever since its inclusion in the Winter Games in 1992, due to the speed, tightness of the indoor track, closeness of the skaters and potential for collisions and falls. Short Track in Russia In February 1985, classic races were replaced by short track skating at the World Universiade in Italy. At the time, Russian skaters had only a vague idea about Short Track and watched the first races from the stands. Over time, this event became more popular in Russia. Short track master centers opened in Moscow and Saint-Petersburg. In April 1986, the Soviet team took part for the first time in a world championship in Chamonix, France. About Short track skating is mass start racing on a small rink, normally the size of an ice hockey rink.

    History
Traditional speed skating is conducted on a 400-meter track against the clock. Although there are two racers on the course simultaneously, they're not really competing against one another. The finishing time is the deciding factor. Since 1998, the 500-meter has been decided by the aggregate time in two trials. In all other races, there's a single time trial. Three women's races were held as demonstration events in 1932, but women's speed skating didn't become a medal sport until 1960. Top of page

    History
Short track speed skating was a demonstration sport at the 1988 Winter Olympics and became a medal sport in 1992. This form of the sport is also known as "pack style," because a pack of four skaters compete on a 111.12-meter track, with the winner being the first to cross the finish line. The four corners of the course are marked by rubber blocks. Skaters are allowed to enter the infield, but they have to pass outside the markers on the turns. A series of elimination heats are held, leading to the semi-finals and finals. Semi-final losers compete in their own final to determine fifth through eighth places. Top of page
