Tips to Help You Teach Spelling
Make sure your students have a firm grasp of the alphabet before you start to teach spelling to them. They need to know all the different ways a certain vowel or consonant can sound before they'll be able to successfully tackle spelling lists and spelling walls. One of the most basic ways to teach spelling is to create a “word wall” in your classroom (or your home classroom if you are home-schooling). The words used on the wall should be written up in alphabetical order, so that your students can find the words they are looking for more easily. Words on the wall should be changed often, to challenge your students to add to their vocabulary and their spelling skills. Use the words as much as you can in their daily lessons, so they are exposed to the words more often, and thus learn to spell them more quickly. Lists of spelling words are a tried and true method to teach spelling, too. You can make sure to use words that they will be encountering in their other classes, so they will have more times to practice the spelling. Helping students recognize the general spelling rules will help you teach spelling, too. Point out patterns that occur in spelling, and they will more readily catch on. The old once-a-week spelling quiz is becoming somewhat a thing of the past, as many teachers have realized that these tests only reflect the students' short term memory of only words on tests. It should be more important to you to teach spelling in a manner that helps them study old repeated words but also be able to figure out how to spell new words, as they are exposed to them.

Many years ago, we learned to spell by learning the names and sounds of letters first, then we put those letters together and formed words. Then we read sentences with those words in them and if we didn't know the words, we couldn't read the sentence. I remember it as being stilted and irrelevant, the stories that were used to teach us to read were boring and bore little resemblance to our personal experience. Nowadays, rather than a rote letter by letter, word by word approach, the teaching of spelling is more student centered and individualised, using words that are (hopefully) relevant and meaningful - these words have often been taken from the children's own writing.

The areas covered by this unit should address many of the spelling problems that are met in the classroom. The unit contains a range of areas and activities. Most students at KS3 should find much that is worthwhile and helpful here. Revisiting and revising spelling rules and patterns at KS3 is essential if students are to do well in SATs and GCSEs. Many KS4 students, also, would do well to revise some of the areas covered in this unit. The 1999 QCA publication 'Improving writing at key stages 3 and 4' identifies many of the typical errors found in GCSE writing, such as those involving homophones and doubling consonants, which are covered in this unit. The examples and activities are really just 'samplers' for students to work on, and they must continue to examine their own spelling in their everyday writing. This is particularly true of the 'Common Patterns' section, which contains only a few examples. If a student has a problem with a particular word and letter pattern, one of the most constructive things they can do is to look for examples of the same pattern elsewhere and to study that pattern. Hopefully this unit will encourage students to be more aware of the words that they use. It should also give them some different strategies on how to deal with spelling problems, rather than just giving up. Students learn in different ways, so tracing a word out might be helpful to one student whilst sounding it out is more useful to another.
