Freeman ( Under Suspicion Nurse Betty ) always has a calm, laid back demeanor that hides the intelligence and power actually inside the mind of his character. Although he seems quiet, his characters carry about them certain power that forces people to pay attention to him and fear him. He may be over 60, but still looks like he can kick butt. His acting can be great, but the movie may not be, as in the case of Along Came A Spider . This movie starts out bad, actually gets better as it goes and while stretching ideas rather thin to eke a twist out of hiding here and there, it does the job of being a middle of the road thriller quite well. Basically, I believe this was the first book in a series of Alex Cross (played by Morgan Freeman) profiler thrillers written by James Patterson. Oddly, the studios chose to make Kiss The Girls prior to this which is a warning sign in terms of story to me on anything. Both were huge hits, and while I was never a huge fan of Kiss The Girls I give it the same sort of mild thumb up approach. They are both solid entertainment but never really break out beyond the genre to make them individuals in their fields. Having said that, the one smart choice is the ongoing one of having Morgan Freeman playing the profiler Alex Cross. Freeman walks on screen and exudes a calm intellect that other actors would have to spiel reams of dialogue to come off as sharp.

David Cronenberg presents a more realistic picture of the suffering faced by a schizophrenic, one that should put to rest any thought that the mentally ill can "snap out of it" if only they would get off their butts and should make those who laugh at helpless, acting-out people on the street truly ashamed.
