I've always been taught that there are four seasons: Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. Well, the movie industry has five . They are: Winter (January and February), Spring (March and April), Summer (May to August), Fall (September to just before the American Thanksgiving) and finally "Holiday" (from Thanksgiving to the first weekend of January). The summer movie season used to begin on Memorial Day weekend, but in an effort to stretch this most lucrative season, the studios have begun releasing their blockbusters in the first weekend of May. Such is the case for Spider-Man (please note the hyphen!). In case you're too young to know (I never thought I would say this!), Spider-Man is one of the comic book characters created by Stan Lee in the early 60's (he also created The Fantastic Four The Hulk , and X-Men , among others). The basic premise of the comic book was that Peter Parker, a normal high-school student, gains arachnid-like powers when he is bitten by a nuclear-irradiated spider. When his uncle is killed by a burglar, Parker vows to protect his fellow human beings. Thus, he becomes that "Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man".

Director: Sam Raimi
Cast: Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Joe Manganiello, Rosemary Harris
Duration: 112 minutes
The decision to cast Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker, the bashful Queens High School student who turns into Spider-Man after being bitten by a wayward insect of the species, proves to be spot on, setting the DVD version off and running toward its instant popularity. Maguire has a winning personality and the best part of the ambitious screen production based on the popular comic book is getting to know Peter and watching his gradual acquisition of his spider-like abilities. Adults as well as youngsters can get a kick out of seeing the shy young man turn into the agile crusader who climbs buildings, leaps between them, casts his webs and keeps the special effects experts busy. It also helps in the adaptation of the creation by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko to have Kirsten Dunst on hand as the girl next door and the object of his concealed affections. Her role as Mary Jane doesn't require the kind of complex performance she gives as Marion Davies in The Cat's Meow , but she is so fetching and warm that she lights up the screen whenever she appears. Given the phenomenal success of the film in both cinemas and on DVD, being co-starred should be a boon for her future in other major roles.

Yeah, I know that the bible grants us dominionl, but look at how we can be snapped like at a twig in the hands of an ape; how the most muttish dog can run faster than we can and have a sense of smell a hundred times more acute than those of our own species; how little chamelons and change colors; and most of all how even the lowly flea, the ugly pigeon and the beautiful butterfly alike can fly under their own power. That's what might come to your mind when you see "Spider- Man," David Koepp's snappy adaptation of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's Marvel Comic Book series of the same name directed by Sam Raimi whose gift for imaginative, even surreal cinema has been proven by his helming of "The Hudsucker Proxy," "The Gift," and "Darkman." Whether or not you're a fan of the 40- year-old Marvel comic or what we used to call joke-books in general, you'll marvel at the way a nerdy lad, given some of the gifts of the lowly spider, is able to conquer evil through his ability to spin webs, climb buildings, and swing like Tarzan from Manhattan skyscrapers to the roofs of residences in his own Queens, New York nabe.

Review of the film by Haro.
http://www.haro-online.com/movies/spider-man.html
View other movie reviews Find a movie: Spider-Man The new Spider-Man movie finally arrives in theaters after nearly a decade of planning. Starting it was the hardest part, and problems included the bankruptcy and reorganization of Marvel Comics and the revolving door of talent behind the scenes, including, most notably, director James Cameron. This movie marks also cements the idea that Marvel can mine its large library of characters into virtually assured movie franchises. After failed adaptations, Marvel rebounded with Blade X-Men , and is prepping The Hulk Daredevil Ghost Rider , and, hopefully, a better Punisher . Stan Lee and Steve Ditko created the Spider-Man character way back in 1962, and it has made appearances on the big and small screen in various incarnations over the years. Spider-Man was such a popular figure because he was one of the first 'ordinary' heroes. Unlike larger-than-life characters like Superman or Batman, Spider-Man was Peter Parker, high school nerd. He was the guy that everybody picked on and ignored, and he never got the girl. Everybody can relate to the Parker character somehow. Which is why Tobey Maguire ( Wonder Boys ) makes sense as Peter Parker. Initially, it seems odd to cast him, but he specializes in playing the wimp, sort of off-kilter loner. He comes across convincingly as a nerd, and even buffed up for spandex scenes. As Parker, Maguire is unsure and hesitant. When he gets his powers, this hesitation takes over, but soon a sense of freedom and exhilaration replaces it. He is free from the bias everybody has against him, and acts like a different person, quipping with opponents and flirting with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst

Few blockbuster films can climb out of the massive pits of hype they dig for themselves. Spider-Man is no exception. It is not brilliant, masterful, or revolutionary. Rest assured that it does have problems. But when this hype is put aside, and the film is judged on its own, it stands as a very impressive comic book adaption, and a strong film overall.
As you've no doubt heard by now, the casting of Tobey Maguire will probably go down as one of the riskiest, most intelligent casting choices in modern times. His Peter Parker is inspired, and he is completely believable as everyone's favorite webslinger. Thanks to Maguire's 7 months of intensive training in preperation for the film, very little belief needs to be suspended.
Maguire's performance is strengthed by a solid supporting cast. The role of Mary Jane Watson went to Kirsten Dunst, who, despite not looking the part adequately (in my opinion), did a wonderful job of bringing believable depression and anxiety to her character. This was unexpected, but very welcome. When Dunst cries, it's easy to forget you're only watching a performance. Not to be outdone, Willem Dafoe shines as both Norman Osborn, and the Green Goblin. His smirk is Grinchlike, his narrowed eyes convey various emotions flawlessly, and his evil laughter is over the top without ceasing to be intimidating.

http://www.angelfire.com/wi3/spiders/General_Body_Structure.htm
The basic body structure consists of two body parts. They are the cephalothorax and the abdomen. CEPHALOTHORAX The cephalothorax consists of the external body parts. In short, it is basically the head of the spider. It has a face that consists of a tiny mouth with no teeth. It has fangs, or chelicerae, that is used to seize prey. They resemble a hollow claw that if looked at with a microscope, will show that they point in a downward position. Located at the base of these fangs are the poison glands. When the spider is pursuing the victim, it will pierce it with the fangs. Venom, which varies with different spiders, is injected. The venom will only paralyze the victim because a spider will not eat dead prey. Since the spider cannot actually chew, a digestive juice is injected. This breaks down the nutrients of the victim so that the spider may feed. It is kind of like sucking through a straw. This process is known as suctorial feeding Another feature on the head are a pair of pedipalp. "The pedipalps are either the second pair of appendages of spiders, and other arachnids, variously developed for grasping, sensing, fertilizing, etc." as defined by

The construction of a film is surely a delicate thing, but it must pale in comparison to the construction of a trilogy. Filmmakers cannot be too careful when creating a series of films. They cannot allow for too much peril in the first two installments, lest the third feel anti-climactic. They need the introduction and continuation of the story to be exciting, but not too exciting, or they risk undermining the conclusion.
Director Sam Raimi whose first two entries into the Spider-Man series are surely among the better superhero films ever made walked that cinematic tightrope wonderfully for two films, but in the midst of ramping up the action, ultimately failed to give
