Sports law overlaps substantially with labor law contract law antitrust law , and tort law . Issues like defamation and privacy rights are also an integral aspect of sports law. The area of law was established as a separate and important entity only a few decades ago, coinciding with the rise of player-agents and increased media scrutiny of sports law topics.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was formed in 1906 to regulate intercollegiate sports competitions. Membership is voluntary. The NCAA operates along a series of bylaws that govern the areas of ethical conduct, amateur eligibility, financial aid, recruiting, gender equity , championship events and academic standards. The NCAA has enforcement power and can introduce a series of punishments up to the death penalty , the full shut-down of a sporting activity at an offending college.

The laws, regulations, and judicial decisions that govern sports and athletes. Sports law is an amalgam of laws that apply to athletes and the sports they play. It is not a single legal topic with generally applicable principles. Sports law touches on a variety of matters, including contract, tort , agency, antitrust, constitutional, labor, trademark sex discrimination , criminal, and tax issues. Some laws depend on the status of the athlete, some laws differ according to the sport, and some laws vary for other reasons.

    Amateur Athletes
The most basic difference between amateur athletic events and professional events lies in their rewards for participation. Amateur events, by definition, do not reward victors with a prize of great value. Professional events, by contrast, reward participants and victors with money and/or other prizes. An accomplished athlete may choose to compete as an amateur if her sport does not have a thriving professional organization. Some athletes can make a living in amateur sports because victories in high-profile amateur events can lead to advertising deals and other business opportunities.

October 18th, 2010 NCSSORS Journal of Quantitative Analysis of Sports JQAS 2. Sig Mejdal of the St. Louis Cardinals provided insight into his analytical work.  Baseball lends itself a type of analysis that is currently at a higher level than team sports such as basketball and football.  Basketball is catching up quickly, though.  Football looks to be the next frontier of analytical work. 3.  Michael Shuckers presented his work on NFL draft picks.  Several months ago, I read the related paper by Massey and Thaler (2010) that touched on similar topics.  At some point in the next five years, my guess is that someone will research similar issues vis-a-vis the NBA and NHL.  Very interesting!

Sports Law
One of the most significant legal issues in collegiate sports stems from discrimination cases. Discrimination cases generally arise from either Title VI of the Civil Rights Act or Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Title VI (42 U.S.C. º 2000d) was passed as part of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Title VI prohibits discrimination on "the basis of race, color, and national origin in programs and activities receiving federal assistance." Title IX (20 U.S.C. ºº 1681-1688), enacted as part of the Education Amendments of 1972, basically extended the protections of Title VI to sex, "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance." The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is the regulating body for collegiate sports. The NCAA is an association of 1,200 colleges and universities that "governs college sports, including determining student athletic eligibility, scholarship limits, and academic standards for athletes," (Richey, 1999, p. 1). Historically, discrimination lawsuits have been filed against individual colleges or universities by athletes alleging discrimination . Over the past few years, more and more athletes alleging discrimination are also bringing suit against the NCAA. This analysis will discuss the types of discrimination suits being b

24-Year-Old College Sophomore Accuses Parents of Trying to "Cut and Run" Robert "Bobby" Wilson knows about adversity and he knows how to overcome it. Family and friends have watched and rooted as Bobby has been valiantly fighting a battle to complete his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. But six years in and with only 87 credits to show for his efforts his frustrated parents are considering setting a timetable to cut off funding for his education. "Yes, it's true," says a visibly angry Bobby, "some people want me to cut and run from this challenge, but I won't place an arbitrary timetable on learning my lessons, that would be counter-productive." "It's not that we want to cut Bobby off," says Bobby's father, James "Mr." Wilson, "but this has gone on long enough. We never expected the cost to be this high and realistically we're not sure what else he can accomplish at that school. It's time for him to stand up and be his own man, we've given him what we can." Best Entertainment Law Schools and Sports Law Schools
National law school rankings do not focus much upon the best entertainment law schools or sports law schools. While our 2005 law school rankings provide an overall picture, this article specifically examines which are the top law schools amongst entertainment law schools and sports law schools. Please note that there is little information ranking entertainment law schools and sports law schools, so the following information should be verified more so than other national law school rankings presented on Top-Law-Schools.com. Not surprisingly, the majority of the top entertainment law schools and sports law schools are in the entertainment capitals of the world, California and New York City. The two of best law schools in California for these specialties are in Los Angeles, UCLA and USC. National law school rankings always put these law schools in the top 25 law schools overall. However, these are top 10 law schools as both Entertainment law schools and sports law schools. USC generally offers approximately 12 classes on Sports or Entertainment related matters. USC also offers their exceptional alumni network to help students land jobs in these coveted fields, which are often all about connections.
