Square Dancing (pictures at bottom) Square Dancing Recreation Information By Carolynn Van de Vyvere and Adrienne Lindsay Square dancing is a type of folk dancing performed by four pairs of people called a square who dance together. Here's how it works: The dancers start in what's called a "squared set" position, with each pair facing the center of the square and facing a different wall. They then dance a number of steps, which sends all of them whirling and stepping around the square. At the end, they return to their "home" spots to do the next dance. Another way of describing square dancing is "fun set to music." At least, that's the slogan of one square dancing club. "Everyone needs more fun in their life," says club member Chuck Kuhman. Since everyone likes to have fun, this activity attracts all kinds of people. "Square dancing is not just for squares," says Kuhman. "We use all kinds of music, from pop, to Broadway show tunes, to country, to ballads and standards. You will encounter all kinds of people from all walks of life. You will use your mind as well as your body and both will get a workout." The movements of the dancers are directed by a caller. The caller shouts or sings instructions to tell the dancers what movement to dance next. The instructions are basically the names of certain dance steps, like "allemande left," "dosido," and "half sashay."

C alling a square dance is tricky, especially if the dancers are bears. I f you desire, you could just watch these bears dance to your instructions. Try clicking on the Dance box and then clicking on several of the floor tiles. I f you want a challenge, try to get the bears to complete a dance by moving the lady bears to the pink squares and the gentlemen bears to the blue squares.
B egin by selecting a dance from the list. Click on the pink and blue squares on the dance floor to make the dancers change their positions. Diagonal squares will cause a corner foursome to rotate. Edge squares will cause an octet to revolve about a center square. Yellow arrows will appear to indicate the direction each dancer will move.
Y ou may click on future moves while the dancers are still moving. If you make a mistake on a future move, click the Stop button to halt the dancers.

http://www.nefkom.net/preller/squaredance.htm
SQUARE DANCE Was ist Square Dance? Square Dance - Links Was ist Square Dance?

Introduction
The Oregon Federation of Square and Round Dance Clubs was organized in March of 1956, and now includes about 80 clubs from across the state of Oregon, the northern edge of California, and the southern edge of Washington. The purpose of the Federation is to promote the encouragement and enjoyment of square dancing and its associated activities. The Federation holds five meetings annually, one each at the Mid-Winter and Summer Festivals, and three others rotating through the 13 area councils. All meetings are open, and dancers are encouraged to attend. The Federation is financed through membership dues, and revenues from the two annual State Festivals. The Federation uses these funds to cover operational costs and to fund projects that will promote square dancing.
