The country known to have many names, Lanka or Ilankai to the Sinhalese and the Tamils, Taprobane to the ancient Romans, Serendib to the Muslim traders of past centuries, Ceilăo as christened by the Portuguese, Ceylan by the Dutch followed by Ceylon as it was called under the British, and finally Sri (meaning 'auspicious') Lanka, as what it is known today. Sun bronzed beaches, green paddy fields, breathtaking mountains, tropical forests, ancient ruins, an amazing diversity of flora and fauna, near desert regions and a fascinating tapestry of culture, customs and religion - all of this in a packed of teardrop shaped bundle below the Indian subcontinent in the Indian Ocean. Ayubowan, as they say in Sri Lanka with a gentle bow of the head and hands folded together - 'greetings', 'hello', 'good morning', 'welcome', 'how are you', 'may you have a long life', and even 'goodbye' - a small word with so many meanings, describing perfectly the atoll which Marco Polo procrlaimed as the finest island of in this side of the world. The teardrop shaped island of Sri Lanka is positioned on the world map just off the southern end of India in the northern Indian Ocean. It lies between 50 55’ and 90 55 North of the equator and between 790 42 and 810 52’ east of the Prime Meridian. The total area is 65,610 sq km, a size roughly the same as Ireland or Tasmania with a maximum length of 445 km and breadth of 225.3 km.

Currency (US$) Sri Lanka Geography Sri Lanka will enamor you, it is that beautiful. Now that you have decided on your holiday in this island country, it will definitely interest you to know something more about its geography. The island is located in Southern Asia, in fact it can be labeled as a South East Asian country surrounded by the Indian Ocean. The total area of this island is 65, 610 square kilometers. The total water coverage is 870 square kilometers and total land coverage is 64, 740 square kilometers. Sri Lanka geography gives an insight in to how the island country is varied in terms of flora, fauna and other geographical details.
The island is in Indian Ocean, and lies to the southwest of Bay of Bengal and southeast of Arabian Sea. Gulf of Mannar and Palk Strait separates it from Indian subcontinent. The coast of Sri Lanka is visible from Rameswaram in India. The island has a lush green cover in most areas of the island. In the southern central part, the island has mountains, though they are not as high as the Himalayas in India, the mountains do rise to a considerable height with the highest peak, Mount Pedro rising to 2,524 meters above sea level. Sri Lanka geography reveals that this island has a typical tropical climate and the whole year in general is hot and humid. However being surrounded by water has its perks, ocean winds bring in the moisture. The mean average temperature swings quite considerably from around sixteen degrees to thirty two degrees. But normally it steadies between twenty eight degrees to thirty degrees.

    Sri Lanka
    Geography
The island of Sri Lanka is located in the Indian Ocean, about 400 miles (645 kilometers) north of the equator. It is separated from the Indian subcontinent by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait. Millions of years ago Sri Lanka and India were bridged by a strip of land, remnants of which are still visible.
The" pear-shaped " island of Sri Lanka is 272 miles (438 km) long and 140 miles (225 km) wide at its broadest point. Largely flat and rolling, the terrain is distinguished by a cluster of mountain peaks, the highest of which is the 8,281-foot- (2,524-metre) high Pidurutalagala in the south-central region of the country. Numerous rivers originate in the mountains and flow in all directions toward the sea. The surface drainage of Sri Lanka is made up of about 100 rivers, most of which are mere wet-season rivulets. Twelve major rivers account for about 75 percent of the mean annual river discharge of the country, with those that flow entirely through the Wet Zone (the highlands and the southwestern part of the country; see below) carrying about half the total discharge. With the exception of the 208-mile-long Mahaweli River, all major rivers flow radially from the Central Highlands to the sea. The Mahaweli, which originates on the western slopes of the highest areas of the highlands, follows a circuitous route in its upper reaches before it enters the plain to the east of the highlands and then flows toward the northeast coast. Because a part of its catchments is well within the Wet Zone, this river has a larger and less seasonally varied flow than the other Dry Zone rivers and so is a major asset for irrigation in the drier parts of the country.
