    Island Geography
The Geography of St. Lucia Saint Lucia is a volcanic island and more mountainous than most other Caribbean nations. The highest point is Mount Gimie at 950 meters above sea level. The Pitons, located between the towns of Soufriere and Choiseul on the West side of the island, are two matching peaks that form St. Lucia's most famous landmark. One of St. Lucia's most popular attractions is a unique drive-in volcano.
One third of St. Lucia's population lives in the Capital city of Castries. Other major towns include Soufriere, Vieux Fort, Rodney Bay, and Gros Islet. St. Lucia has a tropical climate with a dry season from January to April and the rainy season from May to December. The northeast trade winds bring relief from the fierce tropical sun. Like the rest of the Caribbean, St. Lucia is prone to hurricanes from late summer through the fall months. The coastline of St. Lucia is without a doubt its greatest attraction. The shoreline boasts miles of white sand beaches, secluded inlets, and natural harbors. The island is surrounded by some of the Caribbean's most pristine coral reefs teeming with tropical marine life. High hills and sea cliffs look out over the beaches to the turquoise waters beyond.

Learning about St. Lucia:Teachers' Page
The St. Lucia Project is a collection of information, photographs and links which will support and extend the teaching of a "locality in a country that is less economically developed" (Geog PoS KS2). There is a choice of activities to suit the teacher's purpose. It is not intended to be used exclusively as the sole resource. They have been produced to complement and extend the existing hard copy resources produced by such organisations as the Geography Association and Worldaware. Neither is it the intention that children systematically work their way though the bank of activities. Teachers need to preselect the appropriate areas that will enhance chosen aspects of the unit. The primary focus is directed towards extending children's knowledge and understanding of a contrasting locality. However, the project can be used to extend learning opportunities in other QCA units: National Curriculum Referencing: ICT Click Here Geography Click Here Here is a set of Fact File Lesson Plans suitable for year 4 - with many thanks to Stephen Freeman School whose Fact File on Peru plan has been adapted for this task. The Island of St. Lucia in the Lesser Antilles of the Caribbean Ocean is an exotic tropical world of grace and beauty. This Caribbean vacation getaway has a rich history of French, English, and African settlers that have all contributed their unique traditions and essence to the St. Lucia culture. The ancient Arawak Indians are the indigenous people who made this tropical paradise their home eons before these visitors. This rich blend of peoples makes St. Lucia an eclectic and interesting Caribbean destination with the strong beats of jazz in the clubs; rich island cuisine at the many island restaurants; the French-influenced building style of the St. Lucia resorts, and cozy pubs reminiscent of the English country side.

http://www.country-studies.com/caribbean-islands/st.-lucia---geography.html
St. Lucia - Geography
St. Lucia is one of many small land masses composing the insular group known as the Windward Islands (see fig. , Caribbean Regional Map). Unlike large limestone areas such as Florida, Cuba, and the Yucatan Peninsula, or the Bahamas, which is a small island group composed of coral and sand, St. Lucia is a typical Windward Island formation of volcanic rock that came into existence long after much of the region had already been formed. St. Lucia's physical features are strikingly beautiful. Dominated by high peaks and rain forests in the interior, the 616- square-kilometer island is known for the twin peaks of Gros Piton and Petit Piton on the southwestern coast, its soft sandy beaches, and its magnificent natural harbors (see fig. , Map of St. Lucia). Mount Gimie, the highest peak, is located in the central mountain range and rises to 958 meters above sea level, a contrast that is also evident in the abrupt climatic transition from coastal to inland areas. The steep terrain also accentuates the many rivers that flow from central St. Lucia to the Caribbean. Fertile land holdings, which support banana farming, are scattered throughout the island. St. Lucia has a tropical, humid climate moderated by northeast trade winds that allow for pleasant year-round conditions. Mean annual temperatures range from 26o C to 32o C at sea level and drop to an average of 13o C in the mountain peaks. The abundant annual rainfall accumulates to approximately 200 centimeters, with most precipitation occurring during the June to December wet season. Hurricanes are the most severe climatic disturbance in this area and have been known to cause extensive damage. Although St. Lucia has historically been spared from serious hurricane destruction, Hurricane Allen decimated the agricultural sector and claimed nine lives in 1980.

Weather information for St Lucia
St Lucia enjoys a warm tropical climate throughout the year so temperature is never an issue on the island, making it a year-round destination for beach lovers. The average daily temperature is around 80F / 27C, with temperatures very similar all year round. Plants flower 365 days a year and trees don't tend to loose their leaves, we are a country where many have only seen ice or snow on television. December to May is the driest and coolest time, with day temperatures in the 75-90F / 24-32C and night temperatures in the 68-81F / 20-27C. June - November is wetter, but don't expect a constant downpour. Rather, there are numerous short but intense showers and the Trade Winds provide a cooling breeze all year-round June to August is the hottest time of year, when daytime temperatures can reach 95F / 35C. Between August and October, tropical storms can build up out in the Atlantic Ocean, but they tend to avoid St Lucia and may reach hurricane force as they head up towards the southern United States. When studying the rainfall figures you should consider that a third of the island is rainforest and this receives much more rain than the coastal resorts.
