Stamp collecting can be fun and certainly easy. Collectors can build a collection around subjects that interest them. Do you love movies or rock and roll? Stars of both can be found on stamps. Are you a sports fan? You can probably find your favorite sport on stamps as well. People who love cats or dogs, trains, planes and automobiles can find their hobbies celebrated on stamps.
Some collectors specialize not on hobbies or topics, but on countries. Others may prefer to collect stamps and envelopes (known by philatelists as "covers").

HOME RSS FEED ABOUT Nov The Qualities of a Good Stamp Collector Filed Under ( Survey ) by Kert Marvin Cervantes asked: Stamp collecting is one hobby that is loved all over the world. Aside from the wonderful experience that stamps give to the collectors, it is also a very inexpensive hobby. Stamp collecting does not only involve collecting stamps per se but also other stamp-related pieces such as envelopes and packages which contains the stamps. Would one believe that stamp collectors are revenue-generating agents for countries which make limited edition stamps? There are collectors who are involved in collecting stamps for the sheer fun of it. There are those who have taken stamp collecting into a higher level and have taken a philatelic way of stamp collecting. Philately is basically the study of the intricate details of a stamp. Many have become philatelists because they have seen the value of the stamps. If one is starting to collect stamps, he can ask his immediate family members or friends for their stamps if they are not into collecting. Many people just throw away stamps without realizing that there are people who might be interested in them. One might want to ask his grandparents regarding stamps, they may have saved some stamps from years ago. Older stamps are harder to find and most probably more expensive than the common ones which are produced today. There are certain basic things that a stamp collector needs to be able to do. These things will make someone enjoy stamp collecting and preserve the integrity of his stamps. Whether a collector is a casual stamp collector or a philatelist, these are must-do things in stamp collecting.

    Stamp Collecting
Stamp collecting is one of the most popular hobbies in the world. Collectors, hobbyists, and historians can explore their world through the stories told by postage stamp designs. The collecting and study of postage stamps and related items is known as philately (a coined Greek word meaning, literally, "love of what is free of further tax"). One of the attractions of stamp collecting is the ease of starting a collection. With access to enough incoming mail, a person can have a collection without any expense. Literally tens of thousands of stamps, including many of the older issues, can be bought for a penny apiece or less. Little special equipment is required. A collector needs only an album to house the stamps, protective plastic pages, some hinges or other types of mounts to attach the stamps to the pages, and a pair of stamp tongs with which to handle them.

      Stamp Collecting
      Update: June 6th, 2010
Useful Tips for the Aspiring Collector
Stamp collecting is a popular and rewarding hobby.  If you are just starting out and would like to know where to start,  here are some helpful tips for you. The first rule of stamp collecting is to find a particular type of stamp you think you would like to collect,  and to take good care of your collection. Below are some suggestions for types of stamps to collect: 1- Location of the stamp  -for example what country,  region,  or state,  etc.
      2- Stamp design.
3- Or a stamp for a particular season or holiday,  such as Christmas stamps, Valentine's stamps. Some people collect one issue of a stamp in volume,  one type of stamp only  -sometimes referred to as a specialist,  and there are others who collect all the stamps that they can find and can afford to. Once you have decided what type of stamp collector you want to be and what sort of stamps you want to collect,  you need to learn how to properly care for your stamps. First of all, remember to always use stamp tongs when handling your stamps.  While stamp tongs bear a resemblance to tweezers,  they are different from tweezers in that they do not have pointy ends.  Tweezers should not be used in place of actual stamp tongs as they may damage stamps.

100th Anniversary of First U.S. Air Mail Flight
Next year will mark the 100th anniversary of air mail in the United States.
According to the AirMailPioneers.org website, "In the year 1911 demonstrations of airplane mail service were made in India, England and the United States. The first air mail service in the United States, however, was conducted at the aviation meeting at Nassau Boulevard, Long Island, N. Y., during the week of September 23 to 30, 1911.
    Earle L. Ovington
with his 'Queen' monoplane, was duly appointed an air mail carrier and covered a set route between the temporary post office established at the flying field and the post office at Mineola, N. Y., dropping the pouches at the latter point for the postmaster to pick up. This service, performed without expense to the Department, was flown at regular intervals during the period, a total of 32,415 post cards, 3,993 letters and 1,062 circulars being carried. It was quite satisfactory on the whole, and very promising."
An entry on Wikipedia points out, "Ovington took off on September 23, 1911 with a load of 640 letters and 1,280 postcards in a mail bag tucked between his legs - the first airplane carry of United States mail authorized by postal authorities. Ovington flew to Mineola, about three miles away, where, as agreed, he dropped the bag in a prearranged spot to waiting postal officials. The drop landed on time and on target, but unfortunately the bag broke on impact with the ground, scattering the mail hither and yon. After a scramble, all the letters and cards were retrieved and sent on the way via regular postal channels, all of them bearing the cancellation 'Aeroplane Station No.1 - Garden City Estates, N.Y.' For this feat Ovington was awarded the title "Air Mail Pilot No.1."
