Links to some of our partners Dear Friends of Corn Island, As some of you have noticed, there isnt much on our website about whats going on with the Corn Island Storytelling Festival this year. For a number of reasons, weve cut down on the public events that well be having this year and, unfortunately, this includes our annual Ghost Tales event. In the past few years, working with state and city agencies, weve attempted to provide more events for young people in the community who would typically not be exposed to storytelling. This year were going focus entirely on that tradition with a number of private charitable events at special needs schools and group homes. Our only public events will be taking place on Saturday, October 11

STORYTELLING!
What are Americans most scared of? In second place is death. In first place is public speaking. Let's nip neurosis in the bud! What I like about this ten-lesson literature-based storytelling unit is that it gives children with a dramatic flair some time on stage, but the activities are structured incrementally so that even children who are terribly shy will ultimately find they have the skills to shine. You can use this model to teach one child to tell a story in front of a group, but why just one? Be a megalomaniac about it! Do it with a classroom of children, or several classrooms of children, or with an afterschool group, or with the dead-end kids on your block. Culminate the acquisition of storytelling skills with a festival the whole community can enjoy. Storytelling has all the benefits of read aloud. It improves language skills such as vocabulary, prediction, sequencing, comprehension, story structure and recall. These skills will also help children become better writers. Just as is the case with read-aloud, children who engage in the activity learn about history and culture, develop emotionally and have better self-esteem. Storytelling stimulates imagination to the nth degree. And storytelling creates a love of story that translates into a potentially life-long love of books the same way read-aloud does. Storytelling and read aloud must be brother and sister. Or, at least, first cousins.

A brilliant afternoon of Haitian stories, drumming, song, and dance filled Scandinavia House ’s Victor Borge Hall on Sunday, May 9th for a Mother’s Day Benefit for Haiti. Diane Wolkstein, Laura Simms and Regina Ress gathered an array of performers — Haitian and American — and a support team of volunteers to celebrate Haitian culture, while raising money for the mothers and children of Haiti. Musician–dancer Peniel Guerrier and partner in performance. (Photo by Tequila Minsky.)
Following a spine–tingling calling–in of the Ancestors by Master Drummer Frisner Augustin of La Troupe Makandal , our MC Laura Simms introduced Lynn Carter, Executive Vice–President of the American Scandinavian Foundation and the Storytelling Center’s President Robin Bady who welcomed us to the benefit. We were then treated to the music and dance of Haiti by La Troupe Makandal and the dances and drums of Tamboula d’Haiti with renowned Haitian dancer Peniel Guerrier.
The stories told were all from Diane Wolkstein’s classic book The Magic Orange Tree and Other Haitian Folktales . Diane and Joy Kelly joined forces to tell the delightful “Horse and Toad,” Lily Cerat told both “Tayzanne” and “The Magic Orange Tree,” Regina Ress told “The Monkey Who Asked for Misery.” and Diane brought tears to all with her telling of “One, My Darling, Come to Mama."

Filed under Applied Storytelling Audience by Brother Wolf on October 13, 2010 at 1:03 pm no comments Eric Wolf: Hi Chris. That is a great question. The answer I give you has lot to do with what sort of storyteller you are; how you tell your stories? How you develop your stories in the past? So it is important to play to your strengths. I have a friend of mine who when he tell stories, Now, me myself when I am learning a story, many times I need an audience to tell to. I have a group here in town and we get together every couple of weeks and I will bring out stories, I will try material and they were very patient forgiving with me. Because I love to bring material out and try it and then bring it back and try it again. And this is the way I develop material. I can read a book; get that story and then what I will do is I will write down the bones of that story out of that book. Tell the story; tell the story; tell the story; over and over again. Develop places in your community you can go to on a regular basis and tell your story. And by doing that you will become even better at the material. You will become even better at what you are doing. And you will become even better at holding on to material; having it available. I find that it takes me about 25 tellings until a story has settled. Sometimes I think it is a really good story.

View other movie reviews Find a movie: Storytelling Storytelling is the third film by written and directed by Todd Solondz, and continues in his tradition of wickedly funny, almost to the point of morbid, humor. Storytelling gained notoriety due to a love scene between Selma Blair and Robert Wisdom that the MPAA deemed to steamy. Rather than cutting, editing, or reshooting the scene, Solondz ( Welcome to the Dollhouse Happiness ) opted to place a red box over the actors. It was his way of protesting what he believed was censorship of his film. It is a bold move, yet it borders on the pretentious, like the rest of this movie. Storytelling consists of two stories, "Fiction" and "Non-Fiction." Both are unrelated aside from the fact that they both touch upon some creative aspect, writing for the first and filming for the second. "Fiction" is the first and more interesting segment. It revolves around Vi (Blair, Legally Blonde Down to You ), a graduate student. She is dating Marcus (Leo Fitzpatrick

Storyteller Jay O'Callahan on Imagination, Listening, and Appreciation
The has posted a talk by storyteller Jay O'Callahan , in which he shares some of his process for developing stories. Included is an excerpt from "Forged in the Stars," a story commissioned by NASA on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.
The audience for this talk aren't storytellers, so O'Callahan's simplifies his process greatly (you would too, if you only had 20 minutes to explain what you do), but notice how the story he tells to illustrate his point is a story about storytelling. In his telling, he's not telling the story of the moon landing, he's telling the story of Neil Armstrong telling the story of the moon landing.

The workshop, co-sponsored by the Smithsonian Associates and the Golden Fleece Group , took place on April 12, 2003 and was introduced by Steve Denning: Steve : A warm welcome to all of you. Its wonderful to see such a packed room. It may be the only sold-out conference in the world, in this particular month.
Many people have come a long way from countries around the world to be at this event. New Zealand, Netherlands, Denmark, Brazil, United Kingdom, Canada, San Diego, Boston and San Francisco. Im probably missing some. But for all those who have made long journeys, a deep and warm welcome. Were going to be talking about storytelling, one of the most ancient and powerful ways of communicating and being human. But were also talking about this as a bridge a bridge to the world of organizations, in which most of us are deeply involved.
