by Chris King

In this article, I am extending a challenge to all of you storytellers, wannabe storytellers, story lovers and story listeners. It is time that we unite and tell everyone with whom we come into contact about storytelling. Whether it is at the water cooler, during lunch in the cafeteria, in line at the post office and/or grocery store, at networking events or during meetings of groups, clubs and/or organizations to which we belong, we need to spread the word. Why? Because so many people have no idea how powerful, captivating, enthralling and important storytelling is.

storytelling. storytelling is an oral sharing of a personal or traditional story, told using the essence of the tradition from which it originates.

    Storytelling
Storytelling is an oral sharing of a personal or traditional story, told using the essence of the tradition from which it originates. As a shared experience between teller and listener, it offers natural language experiences for students. Storytelling can be an enjoyable activity for both tellers and listeners and should be engaged in at all grade levels. The teacher should model storytelling before expecting students to tell stories. As well, students should have opportunities to listen to Native Elders and other storytellers who can provide enjoyment and act as role models for their own storytelling experiences
Storytelling allows students to internalize important aspects of story beginnings and endings, settings, characters, and plot lines. It provides practice in expressing ideas in thought units, using colourful and descriptive language, developing ideas in sequence, and choosing effective action words. The speech abilities needed for storytelling are essentially the same ones required for all speaking activities. Storytelling encourages students to experiment with voice, tone, eye-contact, gestures, and facial expressions. It also lets them practise techniques for holding audience attention. Storytelling encourages reading motivation and aids listening comprehension. It can lead directly to story writing. Before Storytelling As an introduction to storytelling students might tell riddles, jokes, or personal anecdotes that have some story elements. In each case, practice beforehand is required and close attention must be paid to the conclusion or punch line.

    Introduction
Storytelling belongs in every school around the world. Here's the beginning of the 1992 position statement on storytelling from the U.S. National Council of Teachers of English: " Once upon a time, oral storytelling ruled. It was the medium through which people learned their history, settled their arguments, and came to make sense of the phenomena of their world. Then along came the written word [...]. Oral storytelling, like the simpleminded youngest brother in the olden tales, was foolishly cast aside. [...] Luckily, a few wise librarians, camp counselors, folklorists, and traditional tellers from cultures which still highly valued the oral tale kept storytelling alive. [...] Teachers discovered that children could easily recall whatever historical or scientific facts they learned through story." Please click here to read the entire position statement Jackie Baldwin and Kate Dudding are creating documentation ( a booklet , this web site, and a promotional brochure ) that storytellers can present to school administrators and other potential funders to demonstrate the value of using storytelling and storytelling techniques across the curriculum in traditional classrooms. Specific programs around the U.S. are described.

    5. Stories Can Help Awaken Vision In People

    Introduction

Tom Brown, Jr., the Tracker, has talked about the importance of getting healthy ideas out to the young. There is no more effective or quicker path than Storytelling. Teachers and parents already know what Storytelling is. You can bring in Stone Age tools to your presentations. If you tell stories from your heart, you will fill spiritual hunger like few others can, and help begin the Community Healing process. Storytelling is a powerful, beautiful art form. If you can talk, you can do Storytelling.
Tom Peters has said the most valuable people in the country will soon be those who can most quickly get ideas across to other people. Community building is basically sales- sales of good ideas. That's where it all begins. Nothing works better or faster to get new ideas across, or entertains more, than storytelling. I suggested to the big boss at work that training was sharpening the saw, from Steven Covey's retelling of the story of the man too busy sawing to sharpen his tools... and got my point across instantly. If you've ever seen anyone using a chainsaw, who knows what they're doing, you'll notice they spend half their time sharpening the saw- and get the job done in half or less the time it takes with a dull saw.

    Publicity photos over time
If you saw the last post, you've noticed that my hair is longer than it used to be. I've almost always had short hair. This is the longest it has been in 25 years and possibly the first time I've ever put it in a ponytail. With this new look, many peopleeven old friendsdon't recognize me.
This leads me to think about publicity photos I've had over the years. Here is a small sample: Taken by B. Wang, 1992 or 1993? Taken by Wally Emerson, 1993
    Taken by Darrell Sampson, 1999?
    Taken by Mary Howe, 2003?
    Taken by Kate Dinneen, 2008
    Taken by Cristiana Ceschi, 2008

Interview with Agnes Nanogak Goose The visual aspect of storytelling is almost as important as the story. String games Agnes Nanogak Goose for example, felt a strong tie between her art and telling stories. When the art shop closed for a period of time she was distressed as she felt her art could "help other people remember the stories." The prints below by Holman artists illustrate stories. They help us to understand there is more to life than our own limited spheres of experience. They create pictures in our mind and open up our imagination to comprehend a greater dimension of life than we are normally used to experiencing. Stories are vehicles that take us to far off places, places we've never experienced ourselves."
