Stress at work Work stress poses a threat to the health of workers and, in turn, to the health of organizations. Work stress can be defined as the harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the requirements on the job do not match the capabilities, resources or needs of the worker. Work stress can lead to poor health and even injury. One third of our lives are spent at work. Work can be a significant source of stress and discontent. Three quarters of all mental health issues are related to depression. These illnesses can change the way people think, act, and cope. Stress, depression and anxiety take a tremendous toll on both employees and their companies. In Canada it is estimated that 7% of Canadians are absent from work for reasons related to mental health problems. In the last two decades, problems related to workplace stress have increased considerably and today constitute one of the major problems faced by organizations. Migrant farmworker stress: mental health implications.
Farmworkers confront many mental health threats. Farmworker housing is frequently crowded and of low quality. Farmworkers often earn poverty-level wages, and many face food insecurity. They live and labor in communities with a history of anti-immigrant sentiment and potential discrimination, particularly in the Midwest and Eastern United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , which do not have long-term farmworker communities as in Texas and California. In addition, long-term separation from family and community can leave farmworkers feeling lonely and isolated. (1,2) These and many other hardships undermine farmworker mental health and leave health care providers and advocates wondering where to begin, and which threats, if successfully addressed, would have the greatest mental health benefit.
The goal of Migrant Farmworker Stress: Mental Health Implications was to determine which stressors inherent in farm work and the farmworker lifestyle contribute to poor mental health. (3) The study simultaneously examined a full range of stressors through the Migrant Farmworker Stress Inventory (MFWSI), a 39-item self report instrument. (4) The study sought to determine if distinct and coherent types of stressors could be obtained from the MFWSI, and to identify which farmworker stressors were associated with and had the greatest potential impact on symptoms of depression, anxiety, and alcohol abuse.

California Fires
(Incendios Forestales)
The California fires and their smoke pose a number of health risks including serious respiratory ailments reaching far beyond the wildfire boundaries. Smoke can hurt your eyes, irritate your respiratory system, and worsen chronic heart and lung diseases. HHS advises that people in the affected areas take precautions, and recommends taking the following protective actions:
  • Limit exposure to smoke Listen to local air quality reports. Follow your doctor's advice if you have asthma or another lung disease. Do not rely on dust masks commonly found at hardware stores for protection. These masks will not protect your lungs from smoke.
Citizens in the affected area are urged to listen for messages from state and local emergency officials and be aware of evacuation and sheltering orders in their communities.
