Using Data-Based Instruction to Improve the Learning Outcomes of Students Who are Difficult to Teach Abstract by Ann Nevin Home Work How To's by Tanis Bryan and Karen Sullivan-Burstein, (1997), Teaching Exceptional Children Many researchers and teachers have studied the issue of Homework. Cooper and Nye (1994) found that homework accounts for 20% of the time students spend on academic tasks! In fact, the problem with homework has been defined and lamented by students, their parents, and teachers. For example, in a study of the homework patterns of children with disabilities, Bryan and Nelson (p. 32) found remarks such as the following to be typical:
    Parent: " Homework has dominated and ruined our lives for the past eight years." Teacher: "Assigning and evaluating homework is the least enjoyable part of my job...Sometimes it's my worst nightmare."
Polloway, Epstein, and Foley (1992) found that twentyeight percent of students in general education classrooms and fiftysix percent of students with learning disabilities have difficulty with homework. The homework problem is exacerbated for students with disabilities who reported the following difficulties:
