Substitute Teaching and Classroom Management
After you become a substitute teacher and get your first teaching job, you don't normally have a lot of time to develop a relationship with your students, which can make classroom management challenging. However, classroom management is a basic skill for all teachers, even full-time teachers who see their students every day. Your goal as a substitute teacher is to create a positive classroom environment so that you can complete the lesson plans the primary teacher wants you to cover. Substitute teachers need to motivate students to learn, but also must maintain discipline and insist that students respect one another. You can create such an environment by following a few fundamental principles. Here are some teaching websites that provide classroom management strategies:

Introduction Written by an experienced Substitute Teacher, and Illustrated by a High School Student, SUBSTITUTE TEACHING -Tricks of the Trade- gives a broad interpretation of Substitute Teaching. Written for both beginning and experienced Substitute Teachers, this text offers lessons on paper that could otherwise only be learned in the classroom. The beginning Substitute Teacher gets an invaluable glimpse into the field of substitute teaching, and the advanced Substitute Teacher will also benefit from the ideas offered. Mr. Sturgeon, writer, and Keith Gribble, illustrator, worked independently to create this book. Doing this allowed two distinctly different views of substitute teaching: one from a Substitute Teacher, and another from a High School Student. Return to Table of Contents

Don Sublett Roanoke Catholic School, Roanoke, VA, USA
I love your books - especially the Substitute Teacher Instructions Kit. When I was away in Dec. it was great to know that all the information was already in the binder for the incoming supply teacher. It sure is great for the unexpected absences. Everything is there and even things I hadn't thought of are included. I downloaded your book, copied the pages for my Supply Teacher Book and kept a blank so I can prepare easily for next year!!!!”

I am a 25 year veteran elementary and special education teacher so I have quite a collection of resource materials. However, until your books I had not found anything that fit my needs so precisely. I look forward to using my latest purchase, The Substitute Teachers Instructions Kit. I'm not going to be able to start the school year off in September and your book is going to help me guide my substitute until I get back. I have used many similar ideas in the past and always seem to reinvent myselfI won't have to do that anymore.”

Substitute Teaching: An Insider's View Why Do It? By: Deborah Bouley There are several reasons to substitute teach. First there is the convenience of choosing when you work. You can choose to work each and every time you are called, three days a week, or only on Wednesdays and Thursdays. You can choose a particular school, or set of schools to work in. The selections are yours to make. For those of us who are in graduate school pursuing our Masters Degrees in Education, substitute teaching provides us with the experience we need to look good when we apply for permanent positions upon graduation. Plain and simple, it looks better on a resume to have teaching experience than to not have it. Another consideration is that the hours and days available for working coincide with our children. We are off when they are off. We are off for every major holiday, and even some not so known ones. And finally, the pay is competitive with other part-time jobs, if not better. Some districts pay more than others. Some offer bonus incentives. Some offer first 'dibs' on permanent jobs to qualified substitutes in the district.
