edit Ethnicity
Sudan is one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse countries in the world. It has nearly 200 ethnic groups speaking over 900 languages and dialects, though some of Sudan's smaller ethnic and linguistic groups have disappeared, especially in the 1980s and 1990s. Migration of various groups played a part, as migrants often forget their native tongue when they move to an area dominated by another language. Some linguistic groups were absorbed by accommodation, others by conflict. In all of this, however, due to the strong Arabic cultural influence in the country, particularly in the northern part of the country, the Sudanese dialect of Arabic is the lingua franca spoken amongst Sudanese peoples, though the

These include the Jamala and the Nubians in the north; the Beja in the Red Sea Hills; and several Nilotic peoples in the south, including the Azande, Dinka, Nuer, and Shilluk. Despite a devastating civil war and a number of natural disasters, the population has an average growth rate of 3 percent. There is also a steady rural-urban migration. Linguistic Affiliation.

Sudan Africa
CULTURE Sudan is a miniature representation of Africa: a large country with geographic, extremes ranging from sandy desert to tropical forest. It has about 600 tribes who have Arabic as their common language, beside there are about 142 different languages. The cuisine is a melding of the many varied backgrounds of the people who live in the Sudan's land. The ritual of hospitality is as important in the Sudan as it is in other Arab and African countries. And while there is a measure of similarity in all the Arab and African countries, each has its unique characteristics. For example, no other country prepares coffee as the Sudanese do, and if this country acquired culinary fame, it is for its Sudanese Jebena (Special made Sudanese Coffee). The Sudanese fry their coffee beans in a special pot over charcoal and then grind it with cloves and certain spices. They steep it in hot water and serve it lovingly in tiny coffee cups after straining it through a special tresh grass sieve.

Singing sorrow
Articles and reports sourced from the Internet are edited and remixed to voice the genocide and the ‘rape crisis’ in Sudan. I mix a traditional approach to singing death and trauma called ‘keening’, with poetry, drawing and video. The project includes this blog to list source information, present work and discuss my difficulties when considering how to make this work in an appropriate way. The Sudanese government do not acknowledge the genocide in Sudan. Amnesty International says rape is used as a ‘weapon of war’ in Sudan. Men and boys are tortured and murdered. Women and girls as young as seven and eight risk violent attacks from militia when they leave refugee camps to gather food and firewood. Without these supplies their families would die. If they are left alive, the long term psychological and physical damage these attack cause are beyond measure. These songs attempt to voice the outrage I feel for the daily struggle Sudanese women from the refugee camps face and how their lives are constantly on the brink of terror. Women who endure violent gang rapes may be ostrasized from the community as rape is taboo in Sudan.
