Sufi Islam
The term "Sufi" derives from three Arabic letters sa, wa and fa. There have been many opinions on the reason for its origin from sa wa fa. The most frequently cited in Western dictionnaries suggests the Arabic word "suf" meaning "wool" in the sense of "cloak", referring to the simple cloaks the original Sufis wore. Some initiates are given a specially designed, colored wool vest which is symbolic of the woolen robes of poverty worn by ancient dervishes, and signifies the loving commitment of the dervish to serve humanity. The Sufis use letters of words to express hidden meanings, and so the word could also be understood as "enlightenment". According to some the word is derived from safa which means purity. According to another view it is derived from the Arabic verb safwe which means "those who are selected" - a meaning quoted frequently in Sufi literature.

23. Sufi Order International - Toronto, Canada
A comprehensive introduction to the sufi Order International in Canada, with information on their philosophy, practices and activities in Toronto.
http://sufiorder.toronto.on.ca/
Introduction - Home
The Sufi Order International is an esoteric school which provides a setting in which real spiritual experience is possible. We encourage awakening in life, and we work towards a balanced and grounded spirituality. We also encourage an attitude of affirmation of the common ideals of all religious faiths. We do not require an acceptance of any specific religious beliefs, nor do we seek to convert anyone from one faith to another. We feel that real development can only take place if people work with what is meaningful for them, and that a deepening of one's spiritual experience is essential to informed belief. We try to create a safe environment where people will feel free to be spiritually open. Because of this need, we discourage discussions or debates on religious opinions or theology. Instead we attempt to focus any discussion on the experiences which result from spiritual practice. Our hope for our students is that they will find deeper meaning in their own religious beliefs through the experiences gained in our school, and that they will develop an enhanced tolerance towards religious beliefs other than their own. The Sufi Order was founded by Hazrat Pir-o-Murshid Inayat Khan (1882 - 1927) and, until his death, was led by his son

Be Lost in the Call Lord, said David, since you do not need us,
why did you create these two worlds? Reality replied: O prisoner of time, I was a secret treasure of kindness and generosity, and I wished this treasure to be known, so I created a mirror: its shining face, the heart; its darkened back, the world; The back would please you if you've never seen the face. Has anyone ever produced a mirror out of mud and straw? Yet clean away the mud and straw, and a mirror might be revealed. Until the juice ferments a while in the cask

The substance and meaning of Sufism
The substance of Sufism is the Truth and the meaning of Sufism is the selfless experiencing and actualization of the Truth. The practice of Sufism
The practice of Sufism is the intention to go towards the Truth, by means of love and devotion. This is called the tariqat , the spiritual path or way towards God. The definition of the Sufi
The sufi is one who is a lover of Truth, who by means of love and devotion moves towards the Truth, towards the perfection which all are truly seeking. As necessitated by love's jealousy, the sufi is taken away from all except the Truth. The Truth of Sufism ›

Sufism is...
S ufism is a way to God through love... a general definition of Sufism is: Sufism is a path towards the Truth where there are no provisions except Love. Its method is to look solely in one direction, and its objective is God. The sufi is one who moves towards the Truth by means of love and devotion. Since only one who is perfect is capable of realizing the Truth, sufis strive their utmost for perfection. Perfection in this sense means being in harmony with the Divine Nature, which is the goal of the sufi path.

THE SUFI CONFERENCE
The idea for the Sufi Conferences was conceived one summer evening in 1999 at Sufi Books in New York. We felt a need to share this mysticism of love, and to create a space where people could experience the different forms of Sufism. The joy, intoxicating love and power experienced in the first two conferences in 2001 resonated with this need. Something was born, a container of love for different Sufi orders to come together. Since 2001 we have held eight Sufi Conferences, the final gathering being held in October 2008 at Asilomar Conference Grounds, California. In his closing talk Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee spoke of the deeper purpose of these gatherings. This coming together of different Sufi tariqas and fellow wayfarers has been a celebration of the love and oneness that belongs to this path of love. But there has also been a deeper, more hidden purpose. Although outwardly there have been eight different conferences, from an inner, spiritual perspective there had been one single Sufi Conference that has changed outer location and form over the years, but remained the same gathering. At the first gathering a symbolic dervish tent was erected, a sacred space where these different traditions and lovers of God could come together in service to the One and the need of the time. This tent was moved across America a number of times, and different presenters and participants came under this tent, to remember God through
