by Zos Imos
The following is a brief summary or basic overview of Sufism as i understand it, through study, practice and experience. It is presented in outline form to facillitate easy reading and review. Written by request, i try to address only the most basic and fundamental issues. Like all summaries, it is inadequate and only introductory. Real learning comes through direct experience and reading is not a substitute for real knowledge of the heart. May this document be a source of good for others and may no injury or harm be wrought by it's insufficiency or lack. Questions may be addressed to Zos at (Irwinl@ashley.cofc.edu). As any student of world history may note, civilization typically comes to a grinding halt wherever the writ of a revealed religion runs supreme. For any civilization to blossom, there has to be a certain intellectual and cultural space that is relatively free from dogma and hidebound traditions. In the earliest examples of the Islamic courts, particularly during the reign of the Abbasids in Baghdad, there was an informal separation of church and state and Arab civilization was able to make important gains , drawing inputs from a variety of eclectic sources - both indigenous and external (such as Indian and Mediterranean). But once the paramountcy of the Quran, the Hadith and the Shariat laws began to be more strictly enforced - the Islamic courts needed some alternate current to prevent the newly established Islamic societies from slipping into the dark ages as had occurred in the Christian kingdoms of early medieval Europe. Sufism thus emerged as what seemed like a protestant and liberalizing current, that eventually became the primary vehicle for intellectual advance and the dissemination of culture in societies governed by Islamic sovereigns.

Un iversal Sufism The Sufi Message is a Message of Unity, of Spiritual Liberty, and of Love, Harmony and Beauty, destined for all humanity. Its purpose is not to draw seekers to a new path, but to awaken them to the path which they are destined to tread.
Truth is One; it cannot be otherwise. Therefore the Sufi finds the light and love of the Divine Spirit of Guidance hidden in all names and forms.
In the words of Hazrat Inayat Khan:
The effort of the Sufi Message is to give the opportunity to those serious seekers after truth that they may come in touch with the deeper side of life. No doubt truth is never taught, truth is discovered. It is not the wonderworking, it is not the life of phenomena that is the sign of the seeker. It is in the search for truth that God is found; it is in the finding of God that truth is realized. But where is God to be found? God is to be found in the heart of man.
This Centre has has been established in honor of the Sufi Message of Hazrat Inayat Khan and in memory of Noorunnissa Inayat-Khan, the highly decorated WWII Heroine who gave her life for the cause of Spiritual Liberty.

From The Book of THoTH (Leaves of Wisdom)
Sufism (Persian: صوفی‌گری Sufi gari , Arabic: تصوف, ) is a mystic tradition of Islam . Practitioners of Sufism, known as Sufis, engage in the pursuit of a direct perception of spiritual truth or God, through mystic practices based on divine love. Sufism differs from other branches of Islam in its esoteric rather than exoteric focus. The term Sufism can be used to describe a diverse range of beliefs and practises. Tariqas (Sufi orders) may be associated with Shi'a Islam, Sunni Islam, other currents of Islam, or a combination of multiple traditions. However, Sufism is not really considered a 'sect' in Islam, it is a label given to the Zakireen (Muslims who practice excessive recitations in remembrance of Allah). Sufi thought emerged from the Middle East in the eighth century, but adherents are now found around the world. In particular, Indonesia, the most populous Islamic nation in the world, was introduced to Islam through Sufism, and Sufi practises and beliefs are evident in mainstream religious life across the country. Sufism has produced a large body of poetry in Turkish, Punjabi, Urdu and Persian, which notably include the works of Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi, Bulleh Shah

Sufism is a living tradition of human transformation through love and higher consciousness. While we seek to apply the essential principles of spiritual development, we inevitably transcend much of the conditioning of our culture and identity. Our fundamental framework is classical Sufism and the Qur'an as it has been understood over the centuries by the great Sufis. The Society is affiliated with the Mevlevi Order , and offers training programs, seminars and retreats around the world. These are intended to provide a structure for practice and study within Sufism Our programs and activities are open to all people, and you are welcome to join us for the next Saturday open meeting. Mystic: Rangeen is Sufi Soul's first line featuring one of a kind handmade shirts for men and women, inspired by the sensualist branch of Sufi thought. Colorful prayer beads, trance-inducing music and shimmering shawls are all part of the ecstatic rituals used to connect with a greater spiritual prescence. This form of Sufism is prevalent in South Asia, especially around Mazar subculture. Mazars are shrines for Sufi saints. The shrines are adorned with vibrant shawls and frenzied music abounds. The bold hues of Mystic: Rangeen evoke the kinetic energy of the spirit of Sufism in motion.

This remarkable 40-minute DVD movie shows a collection of visionary paintings, with commentary, made over a 28-year period by Rabia Clark, Ph.D., a teacher in the Sufi Order International. They record mystical states she experienced while in altered states of consciousness during retreats, meditation, regression therapy, and visions, while on her journey to the end of consciousness. They reflect inner stages of spiritual growth, experienced by many mystics in the past, including kundalini awakening. She offers them with the hope that they may help others going through similar realizations. They include visions of angels, planes of ice and snow where the Virgin Mary dwells, out-of-body states, near-death like situations, long periods of intense energy and ecstasy, rainbow-like energy fields, possession by a light-being, visits by powerful inner figures, healing the world, and many other images. The Dervish Project is a deeply spiritual movie, with beautiful music. The viewers are gently led into a meditative state, so they can experience these visions for themselves.
