  • What is suicide and why does it happen? A suicide is an act of self-harm intended to result in death. Some suicides may be seem sudden and impulsive, but most seem to be the result of a process that happens over many weeks, months, or even years. This is one reason that we refer to suicide as being completed – because it is the outcome of a process of psychological debilitation rather than a decision. The process involves severe stress and a serious personal crisis. Risk increases as the crisis, or the individual's perception of it, worsens. Feelings of control and self-esteem deteriorate. Shame and guilt may lead to self-alienation and isolation. Suicidal individuals also experience chemical imbalances. Most notably a depletion of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that inhibits self-harm. Acute suicidality diminishes choice. The individual's options are to endure or end utter agony. Suicide is completed when the psychological pain is so unbearable that death is seen as the only relief. See

    Suicide
First published Tue May 18, 2004; substantive revision Tue Jul 29, 2008 Suicide is an enigmatic and disconcerting phenomenon. Because of others' inability to directly occupy the mental world of the suicidal, suicide appears to elude easy explanation. This inexplicability is stunningly captured by Jeffrey Eugenides in his novel The Virgin Suicides . In the novel, the narrator describes the reactions of several teenaged boys to the suicides of five sisters. The boys keep a collection of the dead girls' belongings, repeatedly sifting through them in a vain attempt to understand their deaths. In the end we had the pieces of the puzzle, but no matter how we put them together, gaps remained, oddly shaped emptinesses mapped by what surrounded them, like countries we couldn't name. (Eugenides 1993, 246)

    SUICIDE: A Civil Right
    by Lawrence Stevens, J.D.
Thinking about suicide is commonplace. In his book Suicide , published in 1988, Earl A. Grollman says "Almost everybody at one time or another contemplates suicide" (Second Edition, Beacon Press, p. 2). In his book Suicide: The Forever Decision , published in 1987, psychologist Paul G. Quinnett, Ph.D., says "Research has shown that a substantial majority of people have considered suicide at one time in their lives, and I mean considered it seriously" (Continuum, p. 12). Nevertheless, thinking about suicide is generally speaking frowned upon and by itself is enough to result in involuntary "hospitalization" and so-called treatment in a psychiatric "hospital", particularly if the person in question thinks about suicide seriously and refuses (so-called) outpatient psychotherapy to get this thinking changed. The fact that people are incarcerated in America for thinking and talking about suicide implies that despite what the U.S. Constitution says about free speech, and despite claims Americans often make about America being a free country, many if not most Americans do not really believe in freedom of thought and speech - in addition to rejecting an individual's right to commit suicide.

Those who commit suicide do so because they firmly believe in the finiteness of life and in the finality of death. They prefer termination to continuation. Yet, all the others, the observers of this phenomenon, are horrified by this preference. They abhor it. This has to do with out understanding of the meaning of life. Sidgwick raised the second requirement and with certain modifications by other philosophers, it reads: to begin to appreciate values and meanings, a consciousness (intelligence) must exist. True, the value or meaning must reside in or pertain to a thing outside the consciousness / intelligence. But, even then, only conscious, intelligent people will be able to appreciate it. It is resolutive, and it also helps decrease the surplus population that has become a burden to the United States Youth Committee. For more than half of them it had come more than once, and a few had even tried taking their own lives at some point. I struggle to understand what could possibly possess someone to think about ending his or her life in such a cowardly way. I cannot think of anything that would drive me to want to kill myself. Nothing could possibly be that bad. But if you really want to talk pain, let me tell you what waits for you if you decide to take your own life and you die without Christ. HELL waits for you on the other side of that trigger. Hell - an eternity without Christ. Time without end of the most unbearable, excruciating pain you could ever imagine. Darkness will surround you forever and all you will hear is the screams and moans of those in the same torment you are in. All you will hear is the laughing taunts of the demons you chose to align yourself with while you were yet alive on earth. Even this description doesn't even come close to what Hell will be like for you. Hell is not some pretty red fire with a bunch of your friends there to greet you and some nice little red guy with horns like you see in some pictures. In Job 24:20 scripture states, " The womb forgets them, the worm feasts on them; evil men are no longer remembered, but broken like a tree". The womb forgets them; your own birthright has left you. The worm feasts on them; you shall be tortured the likes of which you could not even imagine. Evil men are no longer remembered; evil men such as Hitler shall be long forgotten and shall be given back their own.
