Sunburn
A sunburn is reddening of the skin that occurs after you are exposed to the sun or other ultraviolet light.
Considerations
The first signs of a sunburn may not appear for a few hours. The full effect to your skin may not appear for 24 hours or longer. Possible symptoms include:
  • Red, tender skin that is warm to touch. Blisters that develop hours to days later. Severe reactions (sometimes called "sun poisoning"), including fever , chills, nausea, or rash. Skin peeling on sunburned areas several days after the sunburn.
While the symptoms of sunburn are usually temporary (such as red skin that is painful to the touch), the skin damage is often permanent and can have serious long-term health effects, including skin cancer. By the time the skin starts to become painful and red, the damage has been done. The pain is worst between 6 and 48 hours after sun exposure. In severe sunburns

MeSH A sunburn is a burn to living tissue, such as skin , which is produced by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, commonly from the sun 's rays. Usual mild symptoms in humans and animals include red or reddish skin that is hot to the touch, general fatigue, and mild dizziness. An excess of UV radiation can be life-threatening in extreme cases. Exposure of the skin to lesser amounts of UV radiation will often produce a suntan Excessive UV radiation is the leading cause of primarily non-malignant skin tumors Sunscreen is widely agreed to prevent sunburn, although some scientists argue that it may not effectively protect against malignant melanoma , which is either caused by a different part of the ultraviolet spectrum or is not caused by sun exposure at all. Clothing, including hats, is considered the preferred skin protection method. Moderate

Introduction
  • Sun emits ultraviolet light, also known as ultraviolet radiation. There are three types of ultraviolet radiation, UV-C, UV-B and UV-A. UV-C does not impact the skin, and is effectively screened by the atmosphere. Even with depletion of ozone, UV-C does not have any impact on humans. UV-A is very harmful and penetrates not only the skin, but also the eyes. UV-A rays penetrate the skin the deepest.

    Sunburn Overview
Sunburn results from too much sun or sun-equivalent exposure. Almost everyone has been sunburned or willbecome sunburned at some time. Anyone whovisits a beach, goes fishing, works in the yard, or simply isout in the sun can get sunburn. Improper tanning bed use is also a source of sunburn. Although seldom fatal (sun poisoning), sunburn can be disabling and cause quite a bit of discomfort.

    What is a sunburn?
A sunburn is your skin’s response to overexposure to UV radiation. The skin turns red, becomes hot, and painful. A severe sunburn may even result in swelling and/or blistering. The length of time that will cause such reactions varies from person to person. Dark skin helps protect your skin from such a reaction through a larger amount of melanin which absorbs damaging solar radiation. Fair skin contains a smaller amount of melanin and therefore burns more easily and is more susceptible to damage. A tan in a light skined person is a sign of sun damage and the skin trying to prevent further damage.
Why do you peel after a sunburn?
Peeling after sunburn is your body’s way of getting rid of damaged cells. This is necessary because cells damaged by the sun are at risk of "losing control" and becoming cancer. Due to this danger, all damaged cell are instructed to commit suicide by repair mechanisms within these cells. This mass suicide of cells results in whole layers of damaged skin peeling off, to be replaced by other cells underneath those layers.
What is the big deal if the damaged cells are shed anyhow?

      Overdosing on sun?
Certain medications can make you more vulnerable to sunburn. I Like This! Comments 1 of 1 You dutifully applied sunscreen before heading out the door, but even after brief sun exposure you're now lobster-red. According to Paul Doering, a professor at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy, a medication you're taking could be the cause. Certain drugs, when combined with sun exposure, can result in an exaggerated sunburn or a red, bumpy rash. The most commonly used drugs that can cause heightened sun sensitivity, according to Debra Jaliman, M.D., a Manhattan-based dermatologist, include:
      • Tetracycline, Etretinate, Retin-A and Accutane, which are often prescribed for acne or psoriasis Griseofulvin (for fungal infections) Cipro, an antibiotic Sulfa, used to treat bladder infections Lariam, often given to travelers to prevent malaria Thiazides, for high blood pressure High-estrogen birth-control pills.

This web site is an educational resource specifically focused on sun protection issues in America. It discusses the sun and UV, the types of damage that can result from too much UV exposure, and the combination of tactics that provide maximum sun protection. It also includes a glossary and links to other resources. During the past decades doctors have become increasingly aware of the increase in skin cancer in the United States and that all people need to protect themselves from ultraviolet radiation (UV). The harm caused by UV includes premature aging (such as wrinkling and age spots), skin cancer, and permanent, sometimes blinding, damage to eyes. Other medical conditions, such as lupus, can be made much worse by UV exposure. In addition, many people take drugs, such as antibiotics, antidepressants, diuretics and retinoids, that make them extremely sun sensitive. Doctors everywhere agree that education is critical to stopping the epidemic of sun related diseases - especially skin cancer. Many government agencies, foundations and individuals are working to provide helpful sun protection information and programs. For example, the

It can also occur from prolonged exposure to the sun from sunbathing on the beach When a Sim gets a sunburn, their face and portrait turns red. Sometimes if a Sim is in the sunburnt position for too long they will faint and will have suffered heatstroke. This can be resolved in 3 ways:
            • Wait for nightfall, when they will cool down. Another Sim may bring a glass of water to them, and tip it over them. This cools the Sim down. Weather changes also appear to wake Sims with heatstroke
Heatstroke can be avoided by cooling a Sim down once they start over-heating. Give them some lemonade, get them indoors or in the pool. Putting them in a hot tub is not recommended though.
