    Common Causes
Sunburn results when the amount of exposure to the sun or other ultraviolet light source exceeds the ability of the body's protective pigment, melanin , to protect the skin. Sunburn in a very light-skinned person may occur in less than 15 minutes of midday sun exposure, while a dark-skinned person may tolerate the same exposure for hours. It is now recognized that sunburn and sun exposure should not be treated as insignificant. Deaths have resulted from acute sun exposure, and significant temporary disability is experienced by millions of sunburned people each year.

Sunburn
An over exposure to sunlight causes sunburn on the skin. During these conditions, strong sunlight brings about the reddening and inflammation in the outer layers of the skin-the skin is thus reddened in response to the strong sun light and the result is sunburn. Mild cases of sunburn cause only some redness in the skin of the affected individual. The sunburn which is of moderate effect will induce the formation of small blisters along with the reddened skin. Sunburn which is serious or severe, causes the skin to take on a purple or singed tone, this is often accompanied by the development of chills, and fever in the affected individual. The appearance of all these physical symptoms occurs gradually and the symptoms may not peak till twenty four hours following the initial exposure, which brought on the burn. The pain is not the only reason to avoid developing sunburns on the skin. Sunburns occurring repeatedly can speeds up the aging process in the skin and also lead to an increase in the risk of skin cancers affecting the person.

Ultraviolet rays
Melanin in our skin protects the skin from harmful ultra violet rays. But when the amount of exposure to ultra violet rays exceeds the ability of melanin to protect the skin, it results in sunburn. The skin is more exposed to scorching sun while working outdoors, swimming, skiing, and hiking and hence chances of sunburn increase. Certain factors like consumption of birth control pills and antibacterial agents used in soaps make our skin more prone to sunburn.

The Sun and Your Skin
The sun is good for many things. It makes flowers grow, warms the earth, and provides light. The sun also can harm your skin because it emits ultraviolet radiation. The sun's ultraviolet A (UVA) rays are called the "aging" rays. UVA can cause wrinkles, age spots, and tans. The ultraviolet B (UVB) rays are known as the "burning" rays because UVB rays cause sunburn. Both types of UV rays reach the earth every day. Even on a cloudy day, UV rays can damage our skin.
What happens when I don't protect my skin from the sun?
Without protection from the sun's harmful UV rays, the following can occur:
  • Skin Cancer
Most skin cancers develop on areas of the skin that get years of sun exposure, like the face, neck, ears, forearms, hands, and trunk. Basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas are the most common, but melanomas are the deadliest.
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) looks like a flesh-colored, pearl-like bump, or pinkish patch of skin. BCC frequently develops in people who have light skin, but it can occur in people with dark skin. With early treatment, this type of cancer can be cured. Left untreated, BCC can cause bleeding and severe damage, which can be disfiguring.
