45. "Collines De Niassam" Lodge / Sénégal - Sustainability : Ecology
On our arrival at the end of October 2001 at the site of the Lodge, there was no water, electricity or access road for vehicles… nothing in this bush which lay fallow.

Energy Waste is sorted. All kitchen waste feeds the pigs guaranteeing efficiency and organic meat into the bargain. The only problem is that the pigs grow quickly and we find it difficult to kill them for food. Their manure feeds our trees and fertilizes the garden. Plastic bottles are taken by the personnel to be used by the people in the villages as are the many glass bottles. The rest is burnt and buried. Waste water : All waste water goes into sedimentation tanks where the matter degrades. Then it arrives in a shell sink to be finally filtered by the sand. We are going to work on replacing washing products and antiseptics by organic products as they stop the organic cycle being totally efficient (we regularly have to recuperate the fatty deposits from the tanks). SUSTAINABILITY What by Brian Kermath References Links Although the essential conceptual elements of the "sustainability" idea have been around for a long time, the term in its present context did not become a significant item of academic discourse across a range of disciplines until the 1980s following a few seminal publications, and it did not become popularized until a decade later after the release of Our Common Future by the WCED in 1987. Since then, a veritable flood of publications has defined, redefined, and scrutinized the idea and applied it to most human endeavors. Although its charge is undeniably needed for forging a quality and durable future a nd comes with nearly universal appeal, some commentators have argued that sustainability is conceptually too vague to have much practical value. Others have suggested that the idea became so diluted and misapplied as to be meaningless in most forums. Yet despite the many misinterpretations of what sustainability is, widespread cooption of the term, and countless questionable claims of praxis
