Sustainable agriculture - Definition
Sustainable agriculture integrates three main goals: environmental stewardship farm profitability , and prosperous farming communities . These goals have been defined by a variety of philosophies , policies and practices, from the vision of farmers and consumers In production terms, sustainable agriculture refers to the ability of a farm to continue producing indefinitely, with a minimum of outside inputs. In order to grow, the crops and livestock draw energy from the soil air water , and sunlight . As crops are harvested , the energy they used must be replaced in order to continue the production cycle. Some of that energy comes from the larger environment, from sun , air, and rain . Some can be recycled : crop residues and manure from livestock retain nutrients that can be returned to the soil. Using animals (including the farmers!) that are fed by the farm to perform farm labor is another form of energy recycling. Anything that has to be imported, like fertilizer for plants, or petroleum products to run machinery , reduces sustainability. The less the farm needs outside inputs to maintain production levels, the greater its level of sustainability.

Sustainable Agriculture Seven Dimensions of Sustainable Agriculture by Nicanor Perlas Almost everybody talks about sustainable agriculture as an alternative to the outworn “green revolution” agriculture. However, the term has quickly become an empty phrase meaning almost anything including such oxymoron terms as “safe pesticides” and “environmentally friendly” biotechnology. Even WTO advocates use sustainable agriculture to justify corporate control of the food chain. It is important for civil society, which originated the idea, to concretely articulate what it understands by the term “sustainable agriculture.” In 1983, the author and two other friends coined the term, “sustainable agriculture.” Together they co-founded the International Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture (IISA), which spearheaded a global discussion on a widened view of “sustainability.” In recent years, by viewing sustainability from the perspective of the farming family, the author has articulated seven dimensions of sustainability in agriculture, which have been receiving national and international acceptance. Because sustainability immediately brings into focus a temporal consideration, these dimensions have to be understood also as including intergenerational concerns. (For details, see Perlas, N. (1993) The Seven Dimensions of Sustainable Agriculture , Manila: CADI) In the Philippines, this view of sustainable agriculture is widely accepted having emerged from numerous dialogues, conferences, workshops and consultations with farmers, farmer organizations and civil society organizations. The Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (composed of around 300 organizations) for instance embraces this SA framework for advocacy and project implementation.

  • What Sets GSC Apart Testimonials "I'm sure when I ponder my life experiences, during the twilight of my years, I will regard my six weeks in Thailand as six of the most sensational weeks of my life... I traveled to Thailand hoping for an enriching experience. What I found exceeded my wildest expectations." Chris Cox, International Health Program, Thailand Integrated Service-Learning Program . The Sustainable Agriculture Service-Learning Program starts off with a week-long orientation and technical training followed by participation in a variety of community training workshops to promote food security. The workshops conducted during your program will depend on the needs of the community at that time. Tanzania During your first week in Tanzania , you and your fellow volunteers will attend cultural orientation conducted at the GSC office, which includes Swahili lessons, information on safety, culture, and the history of Tanzania Sustainable Agriculture Program participants along with GSC staff involved with rural trainings will be accommodated in tents at base camps around the villages trained for each given workweek, returning to the homestay at the end of the week. Volunteers are part of a team including GSC staff delivering a package of food security innovations for rural village trainings. Whether you are an experienced camper or a novice, worry not! GSC provides all needed equipment including sleeping bags, mats, and tents. You will stay in a secure area, usually in the compound of the village leader, and a local mama will prepare meals for the group. Volunteers find staying in the village culturally rewarding as they have time to visit with community members and truly experience rural Tanzanian life.

The word “sustain,” from the Latin sustinere (sus-, from below and tenere, to hold), to keep in existence or maintain, implies long-term support or permanence. As it pertains to agriculture, sustainable describes farming systems that are “capable of maintaining their productivity and usefulness to society indefinitely. Such systems... must be resource-conserving, socially supportive, commercially competitive, and environmentally sound.” [John Ikerd, as quoted by Richard Duesterhaus in "Sustainability's Promise," Journal of Soil and Water Conservation Jan.-Feb.

What is Sustainable Agriculture?
A griculture has changed dramatically, especially since the end of World War II. Food and fiber productivity soared due to new technologies, mechanization, increased chemical use, specialization and government policies that favored maximizing production. These changes allowed fewer farmers with reduced labor demands to produce the majority of the food and fiber in the U.S. Although these changes have had many positive effects and reduced many risks in farming, there have also been significant costs.Prominent among these are topsoil depletion, groundwater contamination, the decline of family farms, continued neglect of the living and working conditions for farm laborers, increasing costs of production, and the disintegration of economic and social conditions in rural communities. A growing movement has emerged during the past two decades to question the role of the agricultural establishment in promoting practices that contribute to these social problems. Today this movement for sustainable agriculture is garnering increasing support and acceptance within mainstream agriculture. Not only does sustainable agriculture address many environmental and social concerns, but it offers innovative and economically viable opportunities for growers, laborers, consumers, policymakers and many others in the entire food system.

What does “sustainable agriculture” mean to you? If your answer is like most, you probably will begin by talking about sustainability in relation to the environment – protecting the natural ecosystem and conserving non-renewable resources. And, you will be right. If our food and farming systems are to be sustainable over time, we must maintain the health and productivity of land and must conserve water, energy, and the other natural resources upon which agricultural productivity ultimately depends. An agriculture that is not ecologically sound, quite simply, is not sustainable.

Thanks for visiting the Graduate Program in Sustainable Agriculture (GPSA) at Iowa State University!
Building on a solid foundation of agricultural science, the GPSA provides students the opportunity to cross traditional disciplinary boundaries.
The GPSA was the first and remains the only graduate program in the US to offer both the MS and PhD degrees in sustainable agriculture. While competing pro-grams have arisen in agroecology and organic agriculture, the GPSA remains the only grad program that allows students to pursue a true interdisciplinary curriculum that includes the biological, social, and economic elements of sustainability.
Alumni Profile
GPSA alumni are working in a variety of vital careers, aimed at making agriculture more sustainable and improving environmental quality.
Our current alumni profile features Denis Reich , a 2007 MS graduate. Denis accepted a position with Colorado State University as a Water Resources Specialist. To learn more about what Denis does, please see

Sustainable agriculture is a way of raising food that is healthy for consumers and animals, does not harm the environment, is humane for workers, respects animals, provides a fair wage to the farmer, and supports and enhances rural communities. Characteristics of this type of agriculture include:
  • Conservation and preservation. Biodiversity. Farms raise different types of plants and animals, which are rotated around the fields to enrich the soil and help prevent disease and pest outbreaks. Chemical pesticides are used minimally and only when necessary; many sustainable farms do not use any form of chemicals. Animal welfare.
