Sustainable Agriculture
What Is Sustainable Agriculture?
Sustainable agriculture means the practice of growing food, fiber, feed and fuel in systems that meet the needs of both the present and future generations. Sustainable agriculture emphasizes production and marketing practices that are profitable environmentally sound , and that improve the quality of life for farmers, farm workers and the community. Sustainable agriculture systems rely on building healthy soils and crops, enhancing biodiversity, and minimizing the use of non-renewable resources.
What Types of Farming Practices Are Used in Sustainable Agriculture?
Many farmers are working to develop or modify their operations so that they move towards their vision of a more sustainable system. For some farmers it means using cover crops crop rotations , and reduced tillage to build healthy soils and reduce input costs. For others, it means changing farming practices to use more

KANSAS SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE SERIES, Paper #1 ABSTRACT
This report gives an overview of sustainable agriculture. It compares various definitions and dispels some myths. Issues related to implementing sustainable agriculture are discussed. A list of institutions (mainly in Kansas) that support sustainable agriculture is provided. (Contribution No. 97-408-D from the Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station. David Norman and Bryan Schurle are Professors of Agricultural Economics, Rhonda Janke and Hans Kok are Associate Professors of Agronomy, and Stan Freyenberger is Research Assistant in Agricultural Economics, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas, 66506.) SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE INTRODUCTION
Until World War II, increases in agricultural production throughout the world, including North America, primarily involved bringing more land into cultivation. However, during the last 50 years, the rate at which new land has been brought into cultivation has declined sharply. New cropland worldwide expanded at only 0.3% per year in the 1970s compared with a rate of 1% in the 1950s [Hanrahan et al, 1984]. Future increases in agricultural production will have to come primarily from increasing output per unit of land rather than increasing the area cultivated. Remarkable increases in agricultural productivity have occurred in many parts of the world, including North America, during the last two to three decades. However, concerns are increasing as to whether these gains can be maintained in a sustainable manner.

    About
The Russell Ranch Sustainable Agriculture Facility conducts long-term research assessing the sustainability of different cropping systems by comparing system outputs and soil quality indicators. Russell Ranch is a 1500 acre tract near the UC Davis campus, which hosts the Long Term Research on Agricultural Systems (LTRAS) and Sustainable Agriculture Farming Systems (SAFS) projects. The Russell Ranch Sustainable Agriculture Facility is a unit of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute (ASI) The primary objective of the LTRAS and SAFS projects is to understand the relationships between sustainability and external inputs. Sustainability is assessed from long-term trends in yield, profitability, efficiency in use of limited resources (such as water or energy), and environmental impact, such as leaching of nitrate or pesticides. The Russell Ranch site is primarily a research facility and also supports UC Davis' extension and teaching missions by hosting field days, class field trips, undergraduate interns and graduate student research.

Sustainable Agriculture It All Starts with the Soil
The idea for "Sustainable Agriculture — It All Starts with the Soil" grew out of a desire by Screenscope, Inc. , the producer of the PBS television series Journey to Planet Earth, and South Carolina ETV to expand on the idea of sustainable agriculture and to teach youngsters about its importance in their lives. This educational package combines video excerpts from the third program in the Journey to Planet Earth series, Land of Plenty, Land of Want , with solid background information on soil and two fun hands-on activities. Soil was selected as the focus because, as Pennsylvania farmer Steve Groff says in Land of Plenty, Land of Want , "Soil is my number one asset."
"Sustainable Agriculture It All Starts with the Soil" is available in PDF (This file is 104K) Along with teaching kids about soil, "Sustainable Agriculture — It All Starts with the Soil" also demonstrates to youngsters how agriculture is real science, just like chemistry or biology (See "
