And even if you escape the clutches of the alluring scenic beauty of Sweden, the rich cultural heritage of the country is sure to get you. The other good thing about Sweden is the fact that it has avoided getting involved in wars for around two whole centuries. Geography Home Page Sweden Introduction Sweden Background: A military power during the 17th century, Sweden has not participated in any war in almost two centuries. An armed neutrality was preserved in both World Wars. Sweden's long-successful economic formula of a capitalist system interlarded with substantial welfare elements was challenged in the 1990s by high unemployment and in 2000-02 by the global economic downturn, but fiscal discipline over the past several years has allowed the country to weather economic vagaries. Indecision over the country's role in the political and economic integration of Europe delayed Sweden's entry into the EU until 1995, and waived the introduction of the euro in 1999. Sweden: geography
At 449,964 km² (173,720 square miles), Sweden is the 55th largest country in the world, the 3rd largest in Europe and the 1st largest in Northern Europe. The country is somewhat larger than the U.S. state of California, and in 2006 it had a population of 9.1 million people. East of Sweden lies the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia, providing a long coastline, and mellowing the climate. To the west is the Scandinavian mountain chain (Skanderna), a range that separates Sweden from Norway. The southern part of the country is predominantly agricultural, with forests covering a larger percentage of the land the further north one goes. Population density is also higher in southern Sweden, with centres being in the valley of lake Mälaren and the Öresund region.

    Sweden Geography
Sweden geography offers varied forms of naturalness that make it a dream destination for the tourists. You will find not only the urban surroundings but also the vast stretches of sea, mountains. In the west and northeast of Sweden lies the European countries of Norway and Finland respectively. The southwest of Sweden is bordered by the Skagerrak, Kattegat and resund straits. The vast Baltic Sea lies to the east of Sweden. When you go through the Sweden geography , the other borders you find are Denmark, Germany, Latvia, Russia, Poland, Lithuania and Estonia. These borders are considered as maritime borders of Sweden. The resund Bridge creates a link with Denmark in the southwest. The country of Sweden covers an area of 449,964 square kilometers. The vast stretches of Sweden geography make it the largest in Northern Europe. It also makes Sweden the 55th largest country in the world. The urban Sweden comprises only 1.3 per cent of the total Swedish land area. The tourists are enthralled by the vast coastline along Sweden. The coastline contributes to form the eastern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula. The coastline owes a lot to the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Bothnia. The other attraction of the Sweden geography is the Scandinavian mountain chain. This mountain chain makes the separating factor for Sweden with Norway.

    SWEDEN : GEOGRAPHY - NATURE

Sweden has an area of 450,000 km and is situated in a geologically very stable portion of the great Eurasian land mass. East of Sweden is the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia, providing a long coastline, and mellowing the climate further yet. To the west is the Scandinavian mountain chain, a range that separates Sweden from Norway. The southernmost part of the country (Skåne, or Scania) is a continuation of the fertile plains of Denmark and northern Germany. Further north is a heavily wooded highland region (Småland) with soils that are less rich. The rest of southern Sweden consists of a fairly level but fragmented landscape of primary rock with a varied terrain of fields, hills and lakes that is especially typical of the broad zone between the cities of Stockholm and Göteborg (Gothenburg).
Sweden enjoys a mostly temperate climate despite its northern latitude, mainly due to the Gulf Stream. In the south of Sweden leaf-bearing trees are prolific, in the north pines and hardy birches dominate the landscape. In the mountains of northern Sweden a sub-arctic climate predominates. North of the Arctic Circle, the sun never sets during the summer, and in the winter night is unending.
Gotland and Öland are the two largest Islands of Sweden.
